INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

AIR CONDITIONING & HEAT PUMP INDOOR COILS

INTRODUCTION
Vexar coils are designed specifically for use with various models of manufactured housing gas furnaces or electric furnaces in both
down-flow and up-flow applications, as long as the coil was manufactured after 03/01/08 as shown in the serial number. A metal pan
will be required on up flow oil furnaces.

These instructions are prim arily intended to assist qualified individuals trained and experienced in the proper installation
of this type of equipm ent. Som e state codes require insta llation and service personnel to be licensed. R efer to
authorities having jurisdiction for additional guidance. R em em ber that the C lean A ir A ct of 1990 requires technician
certification for handling refrigerant.

ATTENTION!
SOME VEXAR COILS COME WITH A TXV AS THE METERING DEVICE.
HOWEVER, THE SENSOR BULB IS NOT MOUNTED DUE TO POTENTIAL
HEAT DAMAGE AND/OR PROPER BULB LOCATION. THEREFORE,
AFTER THE SUCTION AND LIQUID LINE HAVE BEEN PROPERLY
CONNECTED TO THE COIL THE BULB CAN NOW BE MOUNTED ON THE
SUCTION LINE. MANY TIMES, DUE TO SPACE LIMITATIONS IN
MANUFACTURED HOUSING APPLICATIONS IT WILL REQUIRE THE
SENSOR BULB TO BE MOUNTED VERTICALLY. IF THAT IS THE
CASE THE BULB SHOULD BE LOCATED AT LEAST 6” AWAY FROM
ANY BEND (ELBOW) AND FASTENED ON THE TUBING SIDE
OPPOSITE THE PLANE OF THE BEND. THE BULB SHOULD BE
INSULATED USING THERMAL INSULATION TO PROTECT IT FROM THE
EFFECTS OF THE SURROUNDING AMBIENT TEMPERATURE.

Vexar Coil Service Bulletin
Almost all of the 2007 TXV returns have been processed and checked for reason of failure. This
was handled in two different ways. When the TXV only was returned it was sent back to the TXV
manufacturer for testing. When the complete coil was returned, at our request, we placed the coil
in our test lab as received. Eighty five plus percent of the TXVs sent to the TXV manufacturer
were found to be in perfect operating condition. Only five percent have been found to be faulty
and of that five percent 70% are out of calibration by such a small amount that the Contractor in
the field could not have determined there was a problem.
One hundred percent of the intact coils we requested to be returned due to faulty TXVs were
placed in our test lab under normal AHRI conditions. Ninety five percent plus of the coils tested
were shown to be operating properly.
It appears we are still on a learning curve. The Contractor replaces the TXV or the complete coil
and the replacement does the same thing. Also coils have come back to the factory with the bulb
and capillary tube in pristine condition indicating the bulb was never mounted. However, the
overriding problem we have determined is air flow. When we reduce the airflow the coil begins
to have zero Super Heat and hovers around freezing. Therefore we suspect that the Contractor is
adding refrigerant hoping to increase Super Heat. When charging a TXV system the contractor
MUST ALWAYS use the Sub Cooling method. This method accomplishes two results (1) a liquid
seal at the TXV which allows proper metering. (2) It reducing the potential problem of
overcharging. Four of the most important things the TXV cannot overcome are the following:
• Improper Bulb mounting. The Bulb must be properly positioned and mounted in such a
manner as to maximize contact between the bulb and suction manifold.
• Improper system charging. The TXV must have a liquid seal at the inlet. This is
accomplished using the Sub Cooling method of charging the system.
• Dirty Coils or Filter.
• Most importantly LOW AIR FLOW. It is mandatory we deliver 350 CFM of air per
12,000 BTUs. Anything less may cause a problem. The air flow versus coil face area
must be looked at closely due to potential water blow off. There must be a tradeoff
between air flow and water problems. In all cases the largest face area coil should be
used when possible. Additionally, when applying cooling to Coleman electric furnaces
the blower housing must be closed off so that ALL air goes through the coil. Failure to
separate the coil cavity from the blower assembly will cause the system to freeze up and
may cause premature failure.
Additionally, many Vexar coils are 4-Row coils. This results in more static pressure. Where a 6-7
Sq Ft 3-Row Coil has reduced static pressure drop across the Coil due to the physics. The smaller
size 4-Row Coil has benefits such as better moisture removal, higher Heat Pump temperature in
the winter, and will fit in a smaller space. All of that comes with a trade-off. The Contractor must
take into account the physical system is different and different components may be needed in
some situations. Example; The upgrade blower may be needed on smaller than 5-Ton systems,
The crossover may need to be increased or located directly under the Furnace to take advantage
of velocity pressure, etc. Additionally, the home may require the X-13 (Constant Torque Motor)
blower assembly in some applications.
The Vexar coil TXVs, as with all TXVs, are much different than Fixed Orifices and Capillary
Tubes metering devices. The Thermostatic Expansion Valve modulates the flow of liquid
refrigerant into the Evaporator. The TXV increases the flow in high heat loads and reduces the
flow in reduced load conditions. The TXV is designed to maintain optimum super heat at the
suction side of the evaporator coil. Vexar coil TXVs are preset at 7-degrees at the evaporator
outlet (bulb location). The Contractor should not try to charge the Vexar TXV equipped coils
using the Super Heat Method. Super Heat is checked after the system is properly charged. Use
only the Sub Cooling Method when in the cooling mode, based on the Outdoor Unit manufacturer
instructions.
