Magma began erupting from the sea-bed about 1.2 million years ago. Over the next 500 thousand
years after this, so much lava had come out, that it formed a mountain so tall that its peak rose
above the surface of the sea; Over the next 300 thousand years, a huge quantum of lava emerged
from these parasitic volcanoes around the central cone that an island with a significant area got
created with the deposit, that today is knowing as Jeju Island.
When Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910, Jeju then became known as Saishū, which is the
Japanese reading of the hanja for Jeju.
Jeju Island is the largest island off the coast of Korean penninsula, located in the Korea Strait and it
is the main island of Jeju providence of South Korea. Originally the island was kwon as “Cheju”.
Like a New York City being in the capital of New York State, jeju city is the capital of Jeju Island.
Its crater has been named Baengnokdam. It had 360 satellite volcanoes, some of which were
almost horizontal. Being dormant, their vents have turned to caves where tourists can take a long
walk. These lava tubes attract scientists and tourists alike. Volcanic rocks and soil spewed by
Hallasan cover the island and contain scientifically valuable fossils. Jeju also shows its unbelievable
natural beauty in the form of a vast belt of pillar-shaped rocks near the shore. It also houses a few
unique species of plants and animals. If connecting with nature is your favourite way of relaxing,

Climate:
Typical coastal climate with minimum temperatures above 0°C even in winter due to warm
currents. The island is on the border of moderate and subtropical zones, South coast - subtropics.
Mild climate, 4 seasons:
- Hot summer: usual air temperature is 26 C, highest 33 C; highest water temperature of upper
layers is 28 C.
- Warm and dry autumn: the air is becoming cooler and water temperature remains as in summer
(24 C) until October.
- Short and mild winter with snowfalls in the northern part of the island and in highland, while in
the southern part farmers harvest tangerines.
Weather
The weather conditions may vary across the island but the weather is gorgeous for outdoor
activities during the day when you can fully enjoy the stunning spring flowers on the island, with
average high temperatures. However, take note that it can still be chilly at night.
A remarkable feature of the society in Jeju was its matriarchal family structure. The families were
headed by women because they were the ones who brought home the goods. Women in Jeju
Island were called ‘haenyeo’ which stands for ‘sea women’ in the local language.
Jeju is a large city with a population of more than four lakhs, spread across 19 neighbourhoods.
Local buses run between the various neighbourhoods, both in the Jeju and Seigwipo cities. They
also run to the nearby tourist spots.
Jeju Island's tourist attractions are centred on outdoor activities; you need a clear conducive
