Introduction: Citing and referencing course concepts research & explain what
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is and what organizations use it for. You need to explain
the 4 components of EQ and how they relate to each other to provide an overall score,
supported with proper citations and references per APA. (5 marks)

Emotional intelligence (EI): It is a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor
one's own and other's feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use
this information to guide one’s thinking and action” (Salovey & Mayer,1990)

It can greatly impact everyday organizational decisions, such as hiring, training, taking charge,
and dismissing. However, a leader with emotional intelligence knows how to deal with
setbacks, inspire followers, and keep composure under pressure. This is important for their
success. (Source: Self)

Four Components of Emotional Intelligence:

The following are the 4 Components of Emotional Intelligence:

Self-awareness: how aware and accurate you are in assessing your own behaviors.
Self-Management: the ability to control your own emotions.
Social Awareness: Ability to understand & respond to others’ needs.
Relationship Management: understanding your own & others’ emotions & reactions to manage
situations. (Willson.S,2023)
2. Assessment Score: Attach a screenshot or post your score. Be sure to indicate your
score for all of the 4 components. For this test, the maximum score you can obtain for
each quadrant is 10. (1 mark)

My EQ test score is mentioned below:

Self-Awareness: - 6/10
Self-Management: - 4/10
Social-Awareness: - 6/10
Relationship Management: - 3/10
3. Explanation of your results including:
a. Using your own words supported with external resources, cited and
referenced, provide a general description of your results. (3 marks)

My ability to be self-conscious and socially aware has been characterized as having grown as a
result. However, I could do with developing my relationship and self-management abilities.
I concur about the outcome of both social and self-awareness. This grade is adequate for me. I
am conscious of how my emotions impact my work and teammates. I can still perform better
whenever I completely comprehend and appreciate the range of my emotions and their
impacts. Self-awareness enhances social awareness and discourse through improving
communication and emotion regulation. I can appreciate other people's viewpoints, even
when I disagree. I strive to become a strong, gracious, and non-defensive communicator,
especially when giving feedback or resolving interpersonal conflicts.
I struggle with self-control because I find it difficult to manage and control my emotions,
especially under stressful or time-constrained circumstances. I frequently struggle to strike a
healthy work-life balance. I may improve my psychological well-being and encourage a more
balanced and advantageous reaction to issues and conflicts by strengthening my management
skills.
In terms of relationship management, I sort of concur with the rating. I'm good at persuasion,
coaching, mentoring, and working with others to solve problems. I'm good at developing
connections with others, inspiring confidence in them, and resolving problems. However, by
honing my communication, listening, and conflict-resolution techniques, I may enhance my
relationship management abilities. I might also focus on strengthening my connections with my
clients and coworkers.

3b. Identify & explain at least 2 benefits of your score for leading others,
supported with specific references to course concepts. (4 marks)

The merits are as follows:

1. Self-awareness and Perception are improved Awareness:

My self-awareness score of 6/10 indicates that I have a modest level of this quality,
which is crucial for effective leadership. According to ( Willson.S, 2023), self-awareness
enables leaders to recognize their own behavior, advantages, and disadvantages. It also
entails being conscious of any potential shortcomings in one's own image of oneself. I
have a solid foundation to identify and appreciate my leadership strengths and places
for development because of your moderate self-awareness, which is essential for
making wise judgments and comprehending how others may perceive your actions.

This advantage is consistent with the idea of "Perception Awareness." Effective leaders are
conscious of the fact that their own assessment of their leadership abilities may be incomplete.
I may better comprehend how other people view my leadership by developing my self-
awareness, which will help me make the required changes for increased leadership
effectiveness. (Willson.S, 2023)

2. Improved EQ and social awareness:

My social awareness score of 6/10 and my self-management score of 4/10 show that I have a
solid foundation for comprehending and responding to the feelings and viewpoints of others.
Using this as a foundation, I can focus on developing My self-management abilities to raise my
EQ. (Willson, S. 2023), having a higher EQ can help to become more aware of my own behavior
and how it is seen by others. I can actively focus on improving my self-control and social
awareness, which will help me to become a better leader. As a result, my team and I may be
able to communicate, empathize, and develop relationships more effectively.

(Willson, S. 2023) This advantage is directly connected to the ideas of "Self & Social Awareness"
and "Emotional Intelligence (EQ)." As I may become more sensitive to the feelings and
viewpoints of my team members, improving my EQ can benefit both my own performance and
that of those around me.

3c. Identify & explain at least 2 challenges of your score for leading others also
cited and referenced, supported with specific references to course concepts. (4
marks)
Obstacles to my Leadership Score: The following are discussed below:
1. Low score on self-management:
My self-management score of 4/10 suggests that I may have trouble reining in impulsive
actions and properly handling stress. This presents a challenge for leaders since they
frequently need to keep cool under pressure and make defensible decisions. Leaders
with less self-control may find it difficult to control their emotions and run the danger of
reacting irrationally or impulsively, which can be detrimental to team chemistry and
decision-making.
(Wilson, S.2023)"Emotional Control" is in line with this difficulty. To handle challenging
events and disagreements in a cool, collected manner, leaders must be able to
effectively regulate their emotions, which is a part of self-management. If they want to
successfully handle the responsibilities of leadership, leaders with lower self-
management ratings may need to concentrate on strengthening their emotional control.

2. A low-rating for-relationship management

The explanation for your relationship management score of 3/10 is that it may be
challenging to establish trusting bonds, communicate effectively, and resolve disputes.
Strong relationships with team members and stakeholders are crucial for effective
leadership. When it comes to inspiring and motivating their teams, settling
disagreements, and maintaining a collaborative work environment, leaders with weaker
relationship management skills may struggle.

To accomplish organizational objectives, relational leadership emphasizes the value of

establishing and preserving good connections with team members and stakeholders. To
lead more successfully, leaders with lower relationship management scores may need to
work on improving their relational leadership competencies, such as effective
communication and dispute resolution. (Wilson, S.2023)

4. Improving EQ:
a. Research the possibility of improving EQ. Cite and reference evidence from
external resources to support your opinions. Be sure to explain in detail
what steps your research suggests to improve EQ. (4 marks)

The following ways will help me to boost my EQ:

1. Develop emotional intelligence and mindfulness:

According to research, mindfulness training can enhance awareness of emotions and self-
regulation, two essential EQ traits (Langer, 2014). People who practice mindfulness methods,
such as yoga and prolonged breathing exercises, become more aware of their emotions and are
better able to identify and control them. Gaining a greater awareness of oneself via regular
mindfulness practice might help people make better decisions and healthily handle their
emotions.
2. Empathy Development Through Active Listening
A crucial component of EQ is empathy, which is especially important for social awareness and
handling relationships. Exercises that encourage perspective-taking and active listening can
improve compassion (Eisenberg & Strayer, 1987). Active listening entails paying close attention,
comprehending, and participating in what other people are saying. This practice makes it
possible for people to relate to the feelings and viewpoints of others, and this is crucial for
creating enduring bonds and leading teams successfully.

3. Seek criticism and engage in self-analysis:

One of the tenets of EQ is self-awareness. Self-reflection and feedback from coworkers,
mentors, or coaches can help one identify their strengths and areas for development (Ashford,
Blatt, & VandeWalle, 2003). Individuals can learn about what motivates them emotionally and
pinpoint areas wherein they need to improve their self-control and self-awareness with the
support of constructive criticism and honest self-evaluation.

4. Build Your Communication Skills:

To manage relationships effectively, communication must be effective. According to research,
EQ can be considerably increased by honing communication skills, including nonverbal
interaction, listening skills, and conflict resolution methods (Matsumoto, Hwang, & Frank,
2013). Having these abilities enables people to express their emotions accurately and
comprehend those of others, which enhances interpersonal connections.
By putting these techniques and methods into practice, people can gradually raise their EQ,
which will improve their capacity to perceive, comprehend, control, and engage with others'
emotions.

4.b. Outline your plan for improving your EQ to become a more effective leader. Your
plan should include both concepts and specific actions you will take to improve your
leadership skills as defined in the course. (4 marks)
The following strategy can help me raise my EQ and become a more effective leader:

1. Authentic Leadership: I will practice mindfulness by routinely journaling to reflect on my

emotions and responses to workplace triggers. This will help me to become more self-
conscious and socially aware. By putting myself in others' shoes and imagining the
scenario from their perspective of view, I'll also develop empathy. I can only
comprehend and appreciate other people's decisions and values if I can picture the
scenario from their perspective.

2. Servant Leadership: I will accept and appreciate comments as a gift to improve my

relationship management. I will seek out input frequently and use it to improve both my
usual work and my sessions. I will also gain knowledge on how to resolve conflicts so I
can handle problems at work well. I can end conflicts by controlling my emotions, being
sensitive to the feelings of others, communicating clearly, listening intently, and asking
inquiries.

3. Transformational Leadership: I will exercise mindfulness by paying close attention to

how I respond to workplace emotions like rage, impatience, or self-doubt when
confronted with professional challenges to improve my self-management. To resolve
problems and properly build cooperative solutions for everyone, I will also master
conflict resolution techniques.

4. Responsive Leadership: I want to develop strong, respectful, and non-defensive

communication skills, especially when giving feedback or handling interpersonal
conflicts, to enhance my relationship management skills. I will put a lot of effort into
strengthening my relationships with my clients and workers.
