Lab No 3 - Pressure Dependent Control and Time-Delay Valve
delay valve
Name : Muhammad Rafay Date : 18-09-2023
Regd-No : 2021-MC-39
OBJECTIVES:
1. To use pressure sequence valve to control the cylinder operation based on a preset pressure. [CLO4]
2. To use time-delay valve to add delays in the cylinder actuation. [CLO4]
3. To perform the experiment in a team. [CLO8]
APPARATUS:
Compressor, Service unit, manifold, 3/2 way push button valve, 3/2 roller lever valve, double acting cylinder, 5/2
way directional control valve, pressure sequence valve, time-delay valve.
Pre-Lab Reading:
Pressure sequence valve
Time-delay valve
Embossing operation for plastics
Pre-Lab Work:
Draw the symbols of the following valves in the space given, designate port numbers and assign valve names.
Task 1:
1. Draw the circuit diagram for the problem
2. Designate the valves and indicate the numbering system for
the connections (ports).
3. Attach the pneumatic components to the trainer as described by Figure 3.1: A plastic embossing machine setup
the instructor and describe what happens when you actuate the control valves
1. Circuit Diagram
In this circuit, when a push button is pressed, a double acting cylinder starts moving and it moves until the cylinder is
fully extended. 5/2-way valve changes the direction of cylinder. It then retracts when the sensor 1s2 gets a
signal from pressure sensor. It means that pressure sensor is used at retracting end and when the rod is fully
extended and a preset pressure is shown at pressure gauge, it then makes the cylinder retracts back to initial
position.
Task 2:
1. Draw the circuit diagram for the problem
2. Designate the valves and indicate the numbering system for the connections (ports).
3. Attach the pneumatic components to the trainer as described by the instructor and describe what happens
when you actuate the control valve.
2. Working:
When a push button is pressed, it gives signal to sensor 1S2 to detect if it is fully extended or not. At retracted
end of a 5/2-way valve, a time delay valve is used. Its purpose it to give the double acting cylinder a delay of
6sec at fully extended position. The sensor 1S3 is the retraction sensor at fully extended position. Two quick
exhaust valves are used to vary the speed of a double acting cylinder. Compressed air is supplied through
service unit.
Review Question 1: What can be used to control the speed of extension and retraction of the pneumatic
actuators?
Ans: Throttle valve and flow control valves are used for this purpose.
In this lab, I learnt basic symbols and their working, how the timer and pressure sequence valves are used.
We arranged the wiring and understood the working of these valves and checked if they worked or not. The
Valves have their own capabilities and functionalities which are assessed in this lab.
