Experiment 2 Group 8

This document appears to be a student worksheet containing multiple tests on the topic of mitosis and the cell cycle. It includes matching, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and short answer questions testing understanding of key terms like interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis, and concepts like the four phases of the eukaryotic cell cycle and what happens during each phase. It also covers why mitosis is important for growth and asexual reproduction and defines cancer at a basic level.

6. M 13. T
7. T 14. T

Test 2. Fill in the blanks using the word blank below

Interphase Prophase Anaphase Telophase Metaphase
Cytokinesis 2x Sister Chromatid Centromere Cell Plate

18. Cytokinesis 2x 23. Telophase

19. Anaphase 24. Sister Chromatid
20. Prophase 25. Cell Plate
21. Centromere 26. Cytokinesis
22. Sister Chromatid 27. Metaphase

Test 3. Mitosis Worksheet

1. A Prophase 5. D, A, F, C, E, B
2. C 6. Animal cell, as they have centrioles
3. F 7. Interphase
4. Centriole
8. Mitosis is important to multicellular organisms because it provides new cells for growth
and for replacement of worn-out cells, such as skin cells. Many single-celled organisms
rely on mitosis as their primary means of asexual reproduction.

Test 4: 5.1 Critical Reading

1. What is the cell cycle?

Answer: The cell cycle is a series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide During
the cell cycle, a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form two daughter
cells.
2. What are the phases of eukaryotic cell cycle?

Answer: In eukaryotes, the cell cycle consists of four discrete phases: G1, S, G2, and M. The S
or synthesis phase is when DNA replication occurs, and the M or mitosis phase is
when the cell actually divides.
3. In which phase does a cell spend most of its life? What happen during this phase?

Answer: Interphase and during this time it grows, replicates its chromosomes, and prepares for
cell division. The cell then leaves interphase, undergoes mitosis, and completes its
division. The resulting cells, known as daughter cells, each enter their own interphase
and begin a new round of the cell cycle.
4. What is Cancer?

Answer: Cancer cells are cells gone wrong — in other words, they no longer respond to many of
the signals that control cellular growth and death. Cancer cells originate within tissues
and, as they grow and divide, they diverge ever further from normalcy.

5. What is the S phase? What happens during this phase?

Answer: The S phase of a cell cycle occurs during interphase, before mitosis or meiosis, and is
responsible for the synthesis or replication of DNA. In this way, the genetic material of
a cell is doubled before it enters mitosis or meiosis, allowing there to be enough DNA
to be split into daughter cells.
