Question 1.1: Reading comprehension [20 Marks]

Read the poem about Covid-19 thoroughly and answer the questions that follow.

A POEM ABOUT COVID-19

Covid-19 Invisible, unseen

Attacking across the world
Its tendrils unfurled latching into anything close
Taking people as its host

No discrimination
As it travels out nation
The death toll is rising
But, it’s not surprising
There is no vaccine
For this virus unseen

The Virus Unseen called Covid-19

Is spreading faster causing disaster
To reduce the dead
And combat the spread
The only suggestion
For general protection
Is to wear a mask
A compulsory task
Wash hands and sanitize
Don’t go and fraternise
Keep social distance
It helps with resistance
To Covid-19 This Virus Unseen

We must stop Covid-19

This Virus Unseen
By staying at home
No streets to roam
No cigarettes, no drinking
What is the government thinking?
They say it will help to spread it less
But people are under so much stress

Five levels now, return in stages

But it is going to take us ages
Now the country must unite
Listen to rules and do what’s right
To stop Covid-19

This Virus Unseen Covid-19

Invisible, unseen
Is as assault on mankind
Which we are fighting blind
There’s no real protection
Against this infection

So many are infected

Two weeks to be detected
The frontline can’t cope
All we can do is hope
That we get a reprieve
And at last it will leave
If we all unite
The end may be in sight
To this Virus Unseen
Covid-19

COVID 19

In South Africa and all over the world, people are staying home. We're not going to
school, restaurants, or getting together with others. This is called social distancing.

We have to stay at home due to a highly contagious virus called COVID-19. ‘CO’
stands for corona, ‘VI’ for virus, and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was
referred to as ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ or ‘2019-nCoV.’

Symptoms can include fever, cough, tiredness, loss of smell and taste as well as
shortness of breath. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia or
breathing difficulties. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. These symptoms are
similar to the flu (influenza) or the common cold, which are a lot more common than
COVID-19. This is why testing is required to confirm if someone has COVID-19.

The virus is transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets of an

infected person (generated through coughing and sneezing). Individuals can also be
infected from and touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and touching their
face (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth). The COVID-19 virus may survive on surfaces for
several hours, but simple disinfectants can kill it.

Older people, and people with chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes and
heart disease, appear to be more at risk of developing severe symptoms. We know
it is possible for people of any age to be infected with the virus, but so far there are
relatively few cases of COVID-19 reported among children.

As with other respiratory infections like the flu or the common cold, public health
measures are critical to slow the spread of illnesses. Public health measures are
everyday preventive actions that include:

✓ staying home when sick;

✓ covering your mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue when coughing or
sneezing. Dispose of used tissue immediately;

✓ washing hands often and for at least 20 seconds with soap and water; and

✓ cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects with disinfectants like bleach.

training programme, where they were taught how to track human scent, detect rhino horn and
