AWS D9.1 Guides

This document provides a quick review of essential variables that require requalification of welding procedures according to the AWS D9.1 Sheet Metal Welding Code. It summarizes the positions qualified based on the position tested for groove and fillet welds on plate. It also outlines the thickness ranges qualified based on the thickness of the base metal used for qualification testing.

AWS D9.1 (Sheet Metal Welding Code)

Quick Review on Essential Variables

1-Guide (General on Essential Variables)

AWS D9.1, 5.2 Welding Qualification Test: Any changes on
the following items need requalification of WPS:

Base Metal Groups (1 to 7), Thickness, F-Number, Position,

Process, Process type (manual, semi-automatic, automatic and
mechanized), Type of shielding gas (if used), Current (AC to
DC or vice versa), Change in polarity from DCEP to DCEN or
vice versa, Coating (addition or change), Omission of backing
(if used in test), Mode of transfer (short circuiting to any other
mode of transfer or vice versa)

AWS D9.1, 5.2.2 Fillet test qualify procedure for fillet only.
Qualification of complete joint penetration (CJP) groove weld,
qualify procedure for any groove, fillet, plug or slot weld.
See Annex G of AWS D1.9 for typical joints (Groove, Fillet,
Plug or Slot)

3-Guide (Thickness of Base Metal Range)

AWS D9.1, 5.3.3
The thickness of the thinner base metal qualified (T) shall
provide qualification for metal from 0.5T Min. to 2T Max.

(OR) as an alternative, the following tests a) and b) are

required to cover all sheet metal thicknesses ranges as
defined in Annex C

a) A qualification weld performed on 18 gauge metal

b) A qualification weld performed on 10 gauge metal
