Multiplication of Polynomials-2

The document discusses various methods for multiplying polynomials, including: 1) Multiplying a monomial by a monomial by multiplying coefficients and applying exponent rules. 2) Multiplying a polynomial by a monomial using the distributive property. 3) Multiplying two binomials by using the FOIL method or distributing each term of one binomial into the other. The key steps are multiplying like terms and combining them.

LESSON OBJECTIVES

At any point of the lesson, the students should be able to:

Apply the laws of exponent and distributive property in multiplying

polynomials.

Multiply polynomials such as:

a. Monomial by monomial
b. Monomial by polynomial with more than one term
c. Binomial by binomial
d. Polynomials with more than one term to polynomial with three or
more terms

Solve problems involving polynomials accurately.

Multiplying a Monomial by Another Monomial
When multiplying a monomial by another monomial, multiply the
numerical coefficients. Then, multiply the literal coefficients by
applying the laws of exponents.

(7x2)(4x)
Multiplying a Monomial by Another Monomial
When multiplying a monomial by another monomial, multiply the
numerical coefficients. Then, multiply the literal coefficients by
applying the laws of exponents.

(–3x3y)(–12)
Multiplying a Monomial by Another Monomial
When multiplying a monomial by another monomial, multiply the
numerical coefficients. Then, multiply the literal coefficients by
applying the laws of exponents.

(–5x2y3)(7xy5)
Multiplying a Polynomial by a Monomial
To multiply a polynomial by a monomial, use the distributive property.
Distribute the monomial factor to the terms of the other polynomial
factor.

7(2x – 5y + 3z)
Multiplying a Polynomial by a Monomial
To multiply a polynomial by a monomial, use the distributive property.
Distribute the monomial factor to the terms of the other polynomial
factor.

–2x2(7x3 – 5x2 + 3x – 8)
Multiplying a Polynomial by a Monomial
To multiply a polynomial by a monomial, use the distributive property.
Distribute the monomial factor to the terms of the other polynomial
factor.

(5x2 + 4xy – 7y2)3x3y2

Multiplying Two Binomials
Every term in first binomial must be multiplied to every term in the
second binomial. Like terms must always be combined.

(x + 4)(x + 6)
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY USING THE FORMULA
(x + b)(x + d) = x2 + (b + d)x + bd
Multiplying Two Binomials
Every term in first binomial must be multiplied to every term in the
second binomial. Like terms must always be combined.

(x – 4)(x – 6)
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY USING THE FORMULA
(x + b)(x + d) = x2 + (b + d)x + bd
Multiplying Two Binomials
Every term in first binomial must be multiplied to every term in the
second binomial. Like terms must always be combined.

(x + 5)(x – 7)
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY USING THE FORMULA
(x + b)(x + d) = x2 + (b + d)x + bd

Multiplying Two Binomials
FOIL METHOD: FOIL stands for First terms, Outer terms, Inner terms, and Last terms.

Example:
(x + 4)(x + 6)
First terms → (x)(x) = x2
Outer terms → (x)(6) = 6x
Inner terms → (x)(4) = 4x
Last terms → (4)(6) = 24
x2 + 6x + 4x + 24 = x2 + 10x + 24

Multiplying Polynomial by Another Polynomial
Multiply each term of one polynomial by each term of the other polynomial; then
add like terms.

(2x2 – 3x + 1)(x2 – 4x – 3)
HORIZONTAL METHOD
Distribute the first polynomial factor to the terms of the other polynomial factor.
Multiplying Polynomial by Another Polynomial
Multiply each term of one polynomial by each term of the other polynomial; then
add like terms.

(2x2 – 3x + 1)(x2 – 4x – 3)
VERTICAL METHOD
This is just like multiplying numbers vertically.
(7y2 – 3y + 2)(3y2 + 4y + 5)
