ECHEM Lab 03 Density of Liquid - Version2

This document provides the objectives, materials, procedure, and questions for a laboratory experiment on determining the density of different liquid materials. Students will observe whether various objects sink or float in water, vegetable oil, honey, and dishwashing liquid. They will then mix the four liquids together in a separate container and record the arrangement of layers formed. The experiment aims to measure mass and volume of liquids, calculate densities, and observe flotation properties related to density. Students must include photographic evidence in their laboratory report.

Laboratory Experiment 3: DENSITY OF LIQUID

Objectives:
 To perform activities involving measurement of mass and volume of liquid
materials
 To determine the density of different liquid materials
 To observe objects if they will sink or float in some liquid materials

Materials:
Plastic Cups Small piece of paper
Water Rubber
Dishwashing liquid Cracked Glass (that fits inside the cups)
Cooking Oil Screw
Honey Raisins
Paper clip

REMINDER: Please include picture evidences in the last portion of your laboratory
report as part of the documentation. NO PICTURE EVIDENCES is AUTOMATIC ZERO
in this activity

Procedure
A. Sink or Float:
1. Pour equal amount of water, vegetable oil, honey and dishwashing liquid in
separate cups (about 1/8 of the cup)
2. Place the raisins on each cup and observe if they will sink or float
3. Write the observation in Table 3.1
4. Replace the raisins with paper, paper clip, rubber, cracked glass and screw
then observe also.
5. Write your observation in Table 3.1

B. Mix it up
1. On a separate container, pour individually the four liquids.
2. Does the four separated? On Table 3.2. Write the layer of the liquid materials
produced.
3. Take a picture of the mixture, print it and include that in your laboratory
report.

Questions:
1. Why object may float or sink in different liquid solutions?
2. In Mix it Up experiment, why the arrangement of the fluid is in that pattern?
3. What are the densities of the four liquids?
