BED MAKING

Bed making is a technique in nursing that involves preparing and

arranging different types of beds for patients or clients according to

their condition, comfort and needs. Bed making is important for

ensuring cleanliness, safety, hygiene and rest for the patients.The


purpose for bed making in nursing is to create a clean, comfortable, and safe environment for
patients. Some specific purposes include:
1. Infection prevention: Making the bed correctly helps to prevent the spread of infections. It
ensures that the linen is properly placed and not contaminated.
2. Comfort and well-being: A well-made bed with clean sheets, pillows, and blankets provides
comfort and improves the overall well-being of the patient. It allows them to rest and heal
effectively.
3. Safety: Making the bed properly reduces the risk of accidents or injuries. It ensures that the bed
is free from wrinkles, loose or twisted sheets, and anything that could potentially cause harm to the
patient.
There are different materials use for bed making;
1. Macintosh; a type of waterproof raincoat made of rubberized fabric.
2. Linen; is made up of fibers from the stems of flax plant.
3. Top sheet; is a piece of fabric that lies between you and your blanket or duvet cover
4. Blanket; is a piece of fabric that is used to cover or wrap around a person or an object to keep them warm,cozy,or protected.
5. A pillow; is a soft and cushioned object that you place under your head when sleeping or resting.
6. Air bag; is a device that is used to inflate certain parts of the body,such as lungs,abdomen,or the limbs to prevent pressure,support
and therapy.

7. Counterpanes; are usually light in color and in weight.


8. Draw sheets; consist of pieces of rubber or plastic sheeting.

Rules to be observed in making hospital beds


1 All requirements should be collected before starting.
2 Two nurses are required and they should work in harmony, avoiding jerky movements and jarring
the bed.
3 The patient's face must never be covered by sheets or blankets.
4 The patient must never be exposed.
5 Extra assistance should be available and, if necessary, should be called upon to help to lift the
patient.
6 When pillows are being shaken the nurse should turn away from the patient.
7 Any conversation during bed making should include the patient and should not be on personal
matters between the nurses.

There are different types of bed making in nursing such as;


●Simple unoccupied bed: This is a bed that is not in use by a patient and is ready for a new admission. It is also called a closed bed because
the top sheet, blanket and bedspread are folded over to the foot of the bed to keep the bed clean and protected. In making a simple
unoccupied bed, the materials required are 2 cotton sheets(a bottom sheet and a top sheet), a draw mackintosh, a draw sheet, a pillow and a
pillow case and a counterpane.

●Occupied bed: This is a bed that is made while the patient is still in it. It is done to change the dirty or wrinkled linen and provide comfort
and cleanliness to the patient. It requires special skills and techniques to avoid disturbing or injuring the patient. In making an occupied
bed, the materials needed are 2 cotton sheets(a bottom sheet and a top sheet), a draw mackintosh, a draw sheet, a pillow and a pillow case
and a counterpane.
●Admission bed, specially made bed for patients who are admitted into the ward. It is made in such
a way that a patient or client is admitted without delay.
Purpose
1. To provide warmth for the patient.
2. To allow immediate admission.
3. To facilitate bathing of patient in bed without undue disturbance.
4. To give prompt treatment.
Requirements
Extra requirements to be added to those for simple unoccupied bed. A trolley with the following
items:
• long mackintosh
• two blankets
●Operation bed is a bed that is prepared for a patient who has just returned from surgery. It has clean and sterile linen and equipment. It
may have extra pillows, blankets, towels, basins, sponges, etc. depending on the type of surgery. The bed may also be adjusted to suit the

patent's position and comfort.Extra requirements in addition to those required for a simple bed are two
covered hot-water bottles, bed blocks, bed cradle, infusion stand, oxygen apparatus, a tray by the
beside containing a vomit bowl, dressing towel, a kidney dish containing swab-holding forceps,
dissecting forceps, tongue forceps, tongue spatula, a gallipot containing small gauze swabs, a
receiver for soiled swabs, a gallipot of cold water and a mouth wash in a feeding cup with a receiver
for the return mouth wash.
●Cardiac bed is a bed that is prepared for a patient who has a heart condition or difficulty in
breathing. It is also called a Fowler's bed because the head of the bed is elevated at an angle of 45 to
60 degrees. This helps to improve the patient's circulation and respiration.It is designed to provide
optimal positioning and support for patients with heart-related issues. The bed may have features
such as adjustable height, head elevation, and side rails for patient safety. These beds are
specifically designed to meet the unique needs of cardiac patients.
●Fracture bed: This is a bed that is prepared for a patient who has a fracture or injury in the lower extremities. It has a special mattress
that is firm and does not sag. It also has a wooden or metal frame that supports the weight of the bedclothes and prevents pressure on the
affected limb. The frame may have pulleys and weights attached to it to provide traction to the fracture.

7.DIVIDED BED
A bed made to facilitate observation, examination and treatment of the following conditions with
minimum disturbance
1.Pelvic and abdominal wounds
2.Lower limb amputation to observe for bleeding; avoid weight of bed clothes on the part
3.Bleeding from the other part of abdomen,pelvic and limb
