Colton Chandler

Who am I?
Hey there! My name is Colton Chandler and during the two years that I have
spent working on the course work I have served a Special Education Teacher
in grades 6-8 and as a Behavior Specialist. During both of these roles I had
the pleasure to work within GNETS programs and more importantly to work
with students who needed additional academic and therapeutic supports
beyond what a typical classroom can provide.

In working with students with disabilities, I have found a passion for utilizing
technology to enrich their learning environments and to provide the students
with the necessary resources for them to be successful with little to no adult
support.

Professional Learning
Professional Learning has been a central focus in
the three different schools that I have been a part of
during this time. While the focus of each school is
slightly different, they all fall back to the guiding
question of, “Are we doing what is best for our
students?” Meaning, the leadership teams are all
asking if the PL that has been privded is going to
impact student learning and mastery of content.

ISTE-E Standards
My current position of Behavior Specialist has forced me to take a
step outside of having complete control over what is going on in
the classroom to supporting and leading others as they run their
classrooms. The ISTE-E standards have helped to guide me
through this change as I have worked to collaborate with
colleagues, co-learn and troubleshoot, foster local learning
networks for new teachers and more.

Lightbulb Moment
While taking Personalized Learning and Technology Rich
Environments we were asked to create a plan for
implementing Personalized Learning Plans with our students.
The students within my GNETS classroom all received
services through their IEP, however these plans took them a
step further and allowed for the students to set their own
academic goals and to plan for how they were going to work
to achieve their goal and establish how they would
determine mastery of their goal. After creation, I was able to
implement these plans into my classroom and for the most
part the students took ownership of their learning and they
became determined to see their progress grow as we
tracked it on a graph.

Tomorrow’s Task
While this I am finishing up my first semester as a Behavior
Specialist, I believe that I have found my true calling and that is to
support all learners young and old as they work toward their own
goals. It is my hope that as I continue to serve in a supportive
role, I look will continue to collaborate with classroom teachers
and co-learn with students as they set individual goals. I am also
eager to locate, identify and evaluate new technology tools that I
can share with teachers and students that will help them work
toward mastery of their individual goals.
