Class 8 Holdiay Homework
Students of any age need the freedom to express themselves in a manner that is
respectful, thoughtful, and accepted.
A newspaper can give you a voice that is done in a way that brings credibility to the
writer within you. To begin, it is important to understand the various elements of a
newspaper so that you will have a good idea what you need to gather by way of the
content.
Step -1: Get 2-3 A-4 size thin chart paper,(choose any colour of your choice,
ideally white) write your articles in rough draft, decide the length of your articles
and divide columns accordingly.
An interview- Interview at least one person and write an article based on the
interview. You will need to first devise a list of questions they feel are important. An
interview needs to be conducted with a particular goal in mind. (You can interview a
business man, professional, even a householder). If, for example, you choose to
interview a doctor, questions asked could be how someone can become a doctor,
about a particular problem they face, or what the doctor does in his or her free time
etc.(For household: About their life experiences, how they tackle challenges )
Take a photo of the interviewee or with him/her or sketch him/her. Isolate the
most important bit of information that came out of the conversation and use that in
the title somehow.
A funny opinion: Write an opinion piece on any of the given topics. For writing
this article you must do research to understand both sides of the issue. Then pick a
side of your choice and explain why you believe it to be superior. Your article will
need to include both sides of the issue in some form.
For example, if you write about which superhero, Batman or Superman is the
better hero. You need to include the pros and cons of each superhero, but then
explain you believe one or the other is the better hero. There needs to be elements
of critical thinking in the argument. You may choose topic of your own choice.
Some suggested topics are: Do falling coconuts pose a threat to people near?
Do woodpeckers ever suffer from headaches?
Awaken the writer within you and weave a poem, story or an article based on your
thoughts.

Step 3:
Check your final draft of the newspaper. It should have two to three articles per
page. On one page of your newspaper, you will be able to have two articles of
around 200- 300 words plus images or three articles of around 100-200 words.
At least one corresponding photo per article to be inserted. Two images would be
great.
Once you have the articles and images together, try to format it observing a
random newspaper.
The main newspaper title font…this should be the largest text outside of the
newspaper name itself). Use 2 or 3 columns per page for your newspapers. Keep at
least a 1/8th of an inch between each column. Whatever you choose, it is important
to make it consistent between all columns. Leave the same amount of space
between textboxes and images as you have between columns.
Keep all titles the same fonts and all copy text the same font. Align everything up
well. Paste pictures to fit the space you have. Do not get your newspaper too
crowded. Having extra white space between articles, titles or columns is not a bad
thing.
