Abstract of

CARBON AND ALLOY STEEL ASTM F568M

MATERIALS
EXTERNALLY THREADED METRIC FASTENERS 1996

IFI NOTES:

1. ASTM F568M is a specification developed through the procedures of

ASTM. F568M;s under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F-16 on

I Fasteners.

2. This abstract presents the chemical and mechanical requirements

for nine property classes of carbon and alloy steel externally threaded
metric fasteners: bolts, screws and studs. It omits the requirements
dealing with government provlsioning, applicable documents, qual-
ity assurance and inspection. For the omitted information, refer to
the complete F568M. The paragraph numbers throughout this sf).
straet are those of the complete F568M-96.

3. There Bre three recognized specifications .covering strength prop-

erty requirements of metric steel externally threaded fasteners:

IS0189811 - Mechanical Properties of Fasteners - Part 1:

Bolts, Screws and Studs
SAE J1199 - Mechanical and Material Requirements for Met·
ric Externally Threaded Steel Fasteners
ASTM F56BM - Carbon and Alloy Steel Externally Threaded
Metric Fasteners

ISO 898/1 and SAE J1199 cover fasteners in nominal thread

diameters M1.6 thru M36; ASTM F568M covers these sizes and addi·
tionally all of the larger sizes M42 thru M100.

ISO 89811 presents ten Property Classes - 3.6, 4.6, 4.8, 5.6,
5.B, 6.B, B.B, 9.B, 10.9, and 12.9; SAE J1199 presents six of these -
4.6, 4.B, 5.B, B.B, 9.B and 10.9. F56BM presents these six plus 12.9
and two Classes 8.8.3 and 10.9.3, which are "weathering " steels in·
tended primarily for atmospherically exposed structural fasteners.

IFI has been unable to identify any commercial or industrial

need by North American industry for ISO Property Classes 3.6, 5.6
and 6.8 bolts, screws, and studs. The mechanical requirements and
identification markings specified in the three specifications for fas·
teners of the same nominal diameter and property class are essen·
tially Identical. Because of its broader coverage, ASTM F568M was
selected for inclusion in this book.
