Charge Air System

The document describes the key components of a charge air system for an engine, including: 1. Charge air filters that clean the air entering the system. 2. Turbochargers that compress the filtered air before it enters the engine. 3. Charge air coolers that cool the compressed air before it reaches the engine. The purpose of the charge air system is to provide the engine with clean, dry air of sufficient quantity and quality for combustion.

Function of Charge Air System

The main function of the charge air system is to provide the engine with
clean and dry combustion air of sufficient quantity and quality.
The combustion air (charge air) to the engine is drawn from outside the
building (open air).
The air is drawn through the air intake filtration unit via a pipe system
provided with a charge air silencer into the turbochargers installed to the
engine. The compressed charge air is cooled in the charge air coolers
before it enters the engine’s charge air receiver.

Charge Air Filter General

 The geographical position, weather

conditions, seasonal conditions,
neighbourhood and maintenance
has influence on the design of the filter
system. The charge air filter shall be
chosen and sized according to the
most extreme situations existing at
the site.

 The highest permitted dust

concentration in the charge air is
3 mg/m3 and the filter should be able
to separate 70% of particles above
5mm. The dust concentration and
the particle size must always be
below these limits at turbo charger
inlet.

Dry Filter

The dry filter consists of a 1-stage dry

bag filter with a vertical weather louvre.
Single filter unit for one engine consists of
number of small pocket filters fixes into
one box unit, so that they can be
renewed individually.

Oil Wetted filter - Operation principle

The MultiDuty is a viscous metallic air filter

automatically driven with self cleaning panels.

ROTATION
The dust is removed from the air passing 2
times through the panels impregnated with a
special gel : the VISCOSINE.

In the air section, the panels are overlapping AIR FLOW

one another like a tile roofing so as to form an
endless dense curtain.

ROTATION
The curtain moves a few times per hour and
accomplishes a complete revolution in 24
hours.
The panels are separated and hang widely
spaced for ease of cleaning as they pass
through the viscosine bath at the filter bottom.

The dusts removed from panels by the

viscosine are falling by gravity and the sludge
can be removed periodically from the filter
 bottom with the sludge scraper.

Charge air silencer

 The charge air sound pressure

level after turbo charger is
typically approx. 120dB(A)

 Power Master standard charge

air silencer gives approx. 35
dB(A) attenuation, which is
enough in most cases.
