SI KABAYAN
One day, there was a man in the land of Pasundan whose name was Si Kabayan. This man is known as someone who is resourceful
but lazy. In fact, if you think about it, Si Kabayan is quite a smart person. It's just that he prefers to use his wits to support his laziness
and makes excuses when people rebuke him for his laziness.
Si Kabayan is also married to a woman named Nyi Iteung. Si Kabayan and Nyi Iteung live with Nyi Iteung's parents. Si Kabayan's in-
laws are often annoyed by Si Kabayan's laziness but what can you do? His son loves Si Kabayan, so he also has to learn to accept Si
Kabayan.
Then one day, Si Kabayan was asked by his in-laws to take the snails in the fields. With a heavy heart, Si Kabayan agreed to his
father-in-law's request and went to the rice fields. However, when he arrived in the fields, he felt lazy and just sat there. He didn't take
a single snail there. When the in-laws felt that Si Kabayan had left the house for a long time, he felt confused why his son-in-law didn't
come back home either. The in-laws finally followed Si Kabayan to the rice fields.
When he arrived, he was surprised and furious because he saw Si Kabayan just sitting there relaxing. "Kabayan! Why are you just
sitting here? There, go down to the rice fields and slug the snails!” He said by using a high tone because he felt very annoyed.
Of course Si Kabayan was reluctant to take a snail and gave his in-laws a reason. According to Si Kabayan, the rice fields are very
deep, so he does not dare to go down. If he came down, he felt that he would drown and not be saved. Annoyed, the in-laws pushed Si
Kabayan's body until it fell into the rice fields.
Apparently, the rice fields are very shallow! Si Kabayan just smiled and laughed a little with a face feeling innocent. Finally, Si Kabayan
also took the snails requested by his in-laws as well. When it got dark, the two of them returned home together.
The next day, Si Kabayan's father-in-law asked him to pick the ripe Jackfruit. Of course, with a heavy heart, Si Kabayan agreed to his
father-in-law's request. The Jackfruit tree referred to by the in-laws is located on the edge of the river and its trunk juts above the
river.
Si Kabayan felt he had to work hard to take it. When he arrived, he became lazy to do it. However, because he had promised, he finally
climbed the tree trunk to get the pineapple. When he managed to pick up one jackfruit, the fruit actually fell into the river. The Kabayan
did not pick up the fallen fruit quickly, he only saw the fruit washed away.
When Si Kabayan returned home, the in-laws were very confused to see Si Kabayan coming home empty-handed. Out of curiosity, he
also asked Si Kabayan where the jackfruits that Si Kabayan had picked went to go.
“Lho?! The jackfruit hasn't arrived yet? I asked for it earlier even though the fruit was to walk home first. Apparently, the jackfruit
hasn't arrived yet, yes," said Si Kabayan by putting on a confused face. The in-laws were confused by Si Kabayan's intentions and
asked him to explain again.
"So, when I picked the jackfruit it fell into the river. Apparently, the fruit chose to walk alone until home. Then, I just let it go, but it
turns out that he got lost and didn't know the direction he seemed," the in-laws were furious to hear Si Kabayan's unreasonable
reason. Si Kabayan was scolded thoroughly and Si Kabayan only laughed lightly because he thought his words were quite funny.
A few days later, the in-laws took Si Kabayan to pick koro beans in the garden. They brought large sacks to bring their produce back
home. Arriving there, of course Si Kabayan felt lazy after he picked some koro nuts, while his in-laws were still picking. A few hours
later, the in-laws finished picking all the koro nuts. He was surprised because he did not see Si Kabayan around the garden. The in-laws
thought his son-in-law had returned home to take a nap. With annoyance, he returned home carrying a very heavy sack.
When he got home, the in-laws were very surprised because he found Si Kabayan in the sack. 'This sack is for koro beans, not
humans!' The father-in-law shouted at Si Kabayan. The Kabayan woke up and got out of the sack.
The next day, the father-in-law again invited Si Kabayan to pick koro beans. However, he is still very annoyed with Si Kabayan
because of yesterday's incident. The in-laws also thought about taking revenge.
When Si Kabayan was still busy picking koro beans, the in-laws got into a sack and slept there. A few hours later, Si Kabayan realized
that her in-laws were not in the garden. Finally, Si Kabayan decided to go home. Before going home, he checked the contents of the
sack first. He was very surprised to see his in-laws in the sack. Si Kabayan of course did not want to carry his in-laws. He finally
dragged the sack and his in-laws woke up in pain.
"Kabayan! Kabayan! Stop! This is abah!” He shouted from inside the sack. Si Kabayan put on a surprised face while saying, "This is a
sack for koro beans, not humans!" The two of them returned home without speaking. The in-laws are getting more annoyed with Si
Kabayan. At home, he didn't want to talk to his son-in-law. Si Kabayan also realized that he was now being hated by his in-laws.
Because Si Kabayan is tired of his in-laws' behavior and hatred, he thinks about how to make his in-laws not be annoyed with him
The kabayan asked his wife, what is his father-in-law's name. However, Nyi Iteung did not want to tell him because Si Kabayan's
family custom had a belief that knowing the name of the in-laws was not good and was taboo. However, Si Kabayan persuaded his wife
and said that he wanted to know his father-in-law's name because he wanted to pray for her. If he doesn't know his father-in-law's
name, he's worried that his prayers will get lost and even reach someone else—not his in-laws. Finally, his wife told his father's name.
His name is Ki Nolednad.
After Si Kabayan knew his father-in-law's real name, he looked for palm water that was still thick. He also took a lot of kapok. Then,
he went to the bottom, the place where his in-laws usually bathed. The Kabayan wet his whole body with thick palm water and put
kapok all over his body then climbed a tree and sat on a tree branch while waiting for the arrival of his in-laws who were going to take a
bath.
When his in-laws came and took a shower, Si Kabayan shouted in a deeper voice and called his in-laws by their real names,
“Nolednad! Nolednad!” Si Kabayan's in-laws were shocked to hear his name called. When he looked up, he saw a scary white figure—
even though it was actually Si Kabayan.
"Nolednad, I am the grandfather who watches over this lubuk," said Si Kabayan.
"I warn you, Nolednad, you must love Kabayan because he is my favorite grandson. Don't you dare waste it. Take care of him well. Take
care of his clothing and food. If you don't carry out my message, you will definitely not survive!" Said the Kabayan. Of course his in-
laws were very surprised and he promised himself that he would do better to Si Kabayan. After that incident, the father-in-law was
never annoyed with Si Kabayan again and fortunately Si Kabayan realized his bad attitude all this time.
Finally, they both lived peacefully at home and never fought again.

End of story:
Finally, they both lived peacefully at home and never fought again.
Moral message:
The story of Si Kabayan has several moral messages, including teaching us all not to be lazy people. By always being lazy, we can
actually harm ourselves and others.
Not only that, this folklore also has another moral message, where we should be willing to make sacrifices for our own survival and that
of our family. If we are reluctant to try to make sacrifices, then later we will not be able to obtain what we were aiming for in the first
place.
