Class Exercises On Normal Distribution and CLT

This document contains sample exam questions from Holmes et al (2018) Chapters 6 and 7 on the normal distribution and the central limit theorem. Several questions ask students to calculate probabilities and percentiles related to normal distributions with given means and standard deviations. Other questions deal with using the central limit theorem to approximate sampling distributions as normal, such as the distribution of sample means from a binomial or exponential parent distribution. Sample sizes and distributions of different populations are provided, such as batteries, fly balls, test scores, and poll responses. Students are asked to determine expected values, variances, and probabilities based on these real world examples that demonstrate the normal and sampling distributions.

Class Exercises on Normal Distribution (Ch. 6) and Central Limit Theorem (Ch.

7)

Holmes et al (2018) Chapter 6 End of Chapter Questions

Slides 2-4

24. Suppose X ~ N(9, 3). What is the z-score of x = 9?

(9−9)
Z-score = =0
3

52. X ~ N(6, 2) Find the probability that x is between three and nine.

P(3<x<9) = 0.8663856

Z-score of 3 = -1.5

Z-score of 9 = 1.5

Slides 5-6

64. A multiple choice test has a probability any question will be guesses correctly of 0.25. There are 100
questions, and a student guesses at all of them. Use the normal distribution to approximate the
binomial distribution, and determine the probability at least 24, but no more than 28, questions will be
guessed correctly.

Mean = (nxp)100 x .25 = 25

SD = Sqrt(variance) = Sqrt(100*.25*.75&=Sqrt(18.75) = .433013

Approx. using normal (25,0.433013)

P(24<x<28) = P(x<28) – P(x-24)

Use the following information to answer the next exercises: The length of time a particular smartphone's
battery lasts follows an exponential distribution with a mean of ten months. A sample of 64 of these
smartphones is taken.

12. What is the distribution for the length of time one battery lasts?

X~Exponential(10)

Mean(X) = 10

Variance(X) = 100
S.D(X) = Sqrt(100) = 10

10
13. What is the distribution for the mean length of time 64 batteries last? X ~ Normal(10, )
8

50. Suppose that the distance of fly balls hit to the outfield (in baseball) is normally distributed with a
mean of 250 feet and a standard deviation of 50 feet. We randomly sample 49 fly balls.

50
a. If X = average distance in feet for 49 fly balls, then X ~ Normal (250, )
7
b. What is the probability that the 49 balls traveled an average of less than 240 feet? Sketch the graph.
Scale the horizontal axis for X . Shade the region corresponding to the probability. Find the
probability.

P(X < 240) = 0.081

c. Find the 80th percentile of the distribution of the average of 49 fly balls.
80th percentile is 256

60. A large population of 5,000 students take a practice test to prepare for a standardized test. The
population mean is 140 questions correct, and the standard deviation is 80. What size samples should a
researcher take to get a distribution of means of the samples with a standard deviation of 10?

Population s.d. (sigma) = 80

Sample s.d. = 10

80
10 =
√n
N = 64

Slide 12

68. A pollster asks a single question with only yes and no as answer possibilities. The poll is conducted
nationwide, so samples of 100 responses are taken. There are four yes answers for each no answer
overall. For the mean of the sampling distribution of sample proportions, find the following for yes
answers.

Yes: No = 4:1

Probability of “success”, p, is 4/5 = 0.8

a. The expected value. 0.8

b. The standard deviation. √ 0.8 x (1−0.8)/100 = 0.04
c. The variance. 0.04 2=0.0016
