Glad Tidings: Summer Is Here!

The July issue of the Christ Episcopal Church newsletter provides updates for summer services and events. Worship services will continue as usual, and the rector will be away for a month taking a class in California. Several other clergy will fill in during this time. The newsletter also announces plans for Vacation Bible School and a summer Music Camp in August, and requests volunteers to help cover the church office during the administrative assistant's vacation in July.

Glad Tidings

Summer is here!
Welcome to the July issue of Quick Glad Tidings. Our graphics editor, Pat Daunic, is taking a well-deserved break; so, no photos or clever graphics. Just some updates for the weeks ahead:

Worship will continue at the familiar times of 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. We are singing familiar service music and hymns at 10 a.m. Please note your favorite hymns on the clipboard that youll nd on the piano near the July 2011 refreshments during the coffee hour. Also at 10, we are www.ChristChurchGuilford.org using Eucharistic Prayer C; its responses engage the congregation, and its poetry engages the imagination. Indeed, the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home lead some to call this the Star Trek Canon! Refreshments following the 10 a.m. service become very simple in the summer: A couple of pitchers of iced tea and/or lemonade, a plate or two of nibbles; cups and napkins come from the kitchen. No need to brew coffee, or fuss with cream and sugar. Please consider hosting! The sign-up sheet is in the Parish Hall near the kitchen. Vacation & Continuing Ed. Your Friendly Neighborhood Rector will be away from Guilford from Wednesday, July 6 (leaving after the noontime Healing Service), through Thursday, August 4, visiting friends and family, and taking a class at the Church Divinity School of the Pacic in Berkeley, CA. While on or near the shore in Delaware, California, Oregon, and Washington, Ill be reminded of you all and my home with you in Guilford. In the event of a pastoral emergency, Pat will have contact information for local clergy and for me. I expect you to be well! Clergy Other friendly neighborhood clergy will be taking services while YFNR is away: Our neighbor, the Rev. Ellen Tillotson, having concluded her tenure in Torrington, will celebrate and preach at both services on July 10; the Rev. Wanda Pizzonia, now blessedly free of cast and cane, on July 17; and the Rev. Marianne Osborne, having nished being the interim at Zion Church, on July 24 and 31. If you are away during the summer, look for the familiar The Episcopal Church Welcomes You sign, and worship with the saints who gather there. They will be just as glad to see you as do the folks at home in Guilford. Blessings, Harrison West+ Your Friendly Neighborhood Rector P.S.: In addition to its toll elsewhere in town, the June 23rd deluge caused problems in the Parish House: A plugged gutter caused a cascade through a closed window (you read that right!); quick action by Frank Dodd, David Kish, and handyman Peter Johnson kept the damage to a minimum. Unfortunately, another problem -- water coming up through the oor (you read that right!) at the foot of the steps to the Sunday School classrooms -- seems to be getting worse. Even with ve dehumidiers in operation, the moist air does not smell sweet. This will surely be a topic of the June 29th buildings and grounds conversation. More news to follow.

Wow -- you all really responded to the United Thank Offering appeal this Spring, with a total of $584, which is more than any previous appeal in the last seven years and more than the two campaigns of 2010 COMBINED! Those who wrote checks and those who gave anonymously via the Blue Boxes and envelopes with bills ranging from $1 to $50 (you know who you are) can feel the satisfaction of knowing that you helped someone, somewhere. I am reminded of the words Stephen Jay Gould wrote in the New York Times the weekend after 9/11 as swarms of decent, ordinary people came to help at Ground Zero: "Everyone makes a seless contribution, big or tiny according to means and skills, but each of equal worth." Thank you. --Diane Barker, UTO Coordinator for Christ Church Help Needed with Vacation Coverage. During the summer, we will need people to cover the office during Pat Wakeelds vacation. Please call her at 203-453-2279 if you would like more information or can help out. Thank you.
