Document 3

This document discusses torsion of circular shafts and contains the following sections: contents, course outcomes, programme outcomes, and learning outcomes. It introduces statically determinate torsional members including uniform and non-uniform solid and hollow circular shafts. Examples are provided to calculate the required shearing stress and maximum angle of twist in determinate circular shafts subjected to twisting couples using torsion formulas and the material shear modulus. Students will learn to analyze and design determinate and indeterminate circular shafts for torsion.

TOPIC 3

TORSION OF CIRCULAR SHAFTS

WEEK 12
DR. ROHAYA ALIAS
FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
CONTENTS

CHAPTER 3: TORSION OF CIRCULAR SHAFTS

Ø Torsion Formula

Ø Polar Moment of Inertia

Ø Shear Stress in Circular Shafts

Ø Angle of Twist
COURSE OUTCOMES
1. Classify basic understanding of stresses, strains in solid body,
beam, shafts and column (C3).

2. Develop solutions for problems related to statically

determinate beams (C5).
PROGRAMME OUTCOMES
PO1 :
Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, engineering fundamentals and an
engineering specialisation to wide practical procedures and practices.

PO2 :
Identify and analyse welldefined engineering problems reaching substantiated
conclusions using codified methods of analysis specific to their field of activity.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this lecture, student should be able to:

Ø Analysis and design the determinate and indeterminate (solid / hollow)

circular shafts subjected to twisting couples, or torques by applying the
torsion formulas.
INTRODUCTION
STATICALLY DETERMINATE TORSIONAL MEMBER :
UNIFORM & NON-UNIFORM SHAFT (SOLID & HOLLOW SECTIONS)

Ø In the case of diameters of different lengths of shaft vary, it is necessary to consider the
shafts in different parts by cutting the shaft by appropriate section numbers. The torsion
force acting on each shaft diameter can be determine using the statics equilibrium.

A solid steel shaft is loaded as shown in Figure below.

Using G = 80GPa, determine the required shearing
stress at each segment. Hence, calculate the maximum
angle of twist. Given the diameter is 60mm.
