T1506 Naval Architecture I 22.6.13

The document is an exam for a Naval Architecture I course, containing 8 multiple choice questions and 5 long answer questions. The long answer questions cover topics such as: [1] calculating the waterplane area, centroid, and second moment of area of a ship's waterplane based on half ordinates; [2] determining a ship's new center of gravity and angle of heel when cargo is added; [3] explaining the purpose and procedures of an inclining experiment; and [4] calculating new draughts when a compartment is opened to the sea for different permeability percentages. The questions require applying concepts related to ship design, stability, buoyancy, resistance and model testing.

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE I

Old Subject Code: UG/ME/MS/T/316 QP Code: T0511506

Date: 22.06.2013 Max. Marks: 100
Time: 3 Hrs

Note : (i) Non-programmable scientific calculator is allowed

(ii) Attempt six questions
(iii) Question no. 1 is compulsory
PART – A (10 * 3 = 30 MARKS)
Answer all questions

1 (a) State the Simpson’s first rule

(b) Define Wetted surface area of a ship. Write the formulas used to find it.

(c) Define buoyancy and reserve buoyancy

(d) What are the effects of suspended mass?

(e) What do you understand by transverse metacentre and metacentric height?

(f) What is curve of statical stability? Explain.

(g) What are the effects of adding small masses onboard ship?

(h) Define centre of floatation and MCT1cm

(i) What are the factors on which the frictional resistance is depend on?

(j) Why model testing is carried out? Explain.

PART – B (5 * 14 = 70 MARKS)
Answer any FIVE questions

2 The ½ ordinates of a waterplane 120 m long are as follows : (14)

Sectio
AP 0.5 1 1.5 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 8.5 9 9.5 FP

½ ord 1.2 3.5 5.3 6.8 8.0 8.3 8.5 8.5 8.5 8.4 8.2 7.9 6.2 3.5 0m

Calculate (i) waterplane area

(ii) distance of centroid from midships
(iii) Second moment of area of waterplane about centroid

3 (a) Define Centre of gravity of a ship. (02)

(b) A ship of 4000 tonne displacement has its centre of gravity 1.5 m aft of midships and 4 m
above keel. 200 tonne of cargo are now added 45 m forward of midships and 12 m above the
keel. Calculate the new position of the centre of gravity and the angle in which the centre of
gravity moves relative to the horizontal. (12)

4 Why the inclining experiment is conducted? Briefly explain the procedures to carry out in
details. (14)

5 (a) Define free surface effect (02)

(b) A ship of 8000 tonne displacement has its centre of gravity 4.5 m above the keel and
transverse metacentre 5 m above the keel when a rectangular tank 7.5 m long and 15 m wide
contains sea water. A mass of 10 tonne is moved 12 m across the deck. Calculate the angle of
heel if
(i) there is no free surface of water
(ii) the water does not completely fill the tank (12)

6 A ship 130 m long displaces 14000 tonne when floating at draughts of 7.5 m forward and
8.10 aft. GML is 125 m, TPC is 18, LCF is 3 m aft of midships. Calculate the final draughts,
when a mass of 180 tonne lying 40 m aft of midships is removed from the ship. (14)

7 (a) Define permeability (02)

(b) A box barge 60 m long and 10 m wide floats at an even keel draught of 4 m. It has a
compartment amidships 12 m long. Calculate the new draughts if this compartment is laid
open to the sea when permeability is (i) 100% (ii) 85% (iii) 60% (12)

8 A 6 m model of a ship has a wetted surface area of 8 m 2. When towed at a speed of 3 knots in
fresh water the total resistance is found to be 38 N. If the ship is 130 m long, calculate the
effective power at the corresponding speed. Take n = 1.825 and calculate f from the formula.
