Introduction to Natural Gas

• Natural gas is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, with a Hydrocarbon

Ethane 1-10%
• Ignites when the air-gas mixture is between 5 and 15 Propane trace-5%
percent natural gas. Butanes (i-butane, n-butane) trace-2%
Pentane (i-pentane, n-pentane) trace-1%
Hexane and heavier trace-1.5%
• Colorless, odorless, combustible, clean fuel. Heptane and heavier trace-1.5%
Non Hydrocarbon
• Measured in energy content: Btu Carbon dioxide trace-5%
Nitrogen trace-5%
Hydorgen sulphide trace-3%
CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O + 891 kJ
Helium Upto 5%

1 standard cubic feet: 1031 Btu (500-1550 Btu)
