Program of Instruction

This document outlines a program of instruction for a non-destructive testing course. The 14-week course has three modules that cover the history and introduction to NDT, various NDT methods and techniques, and applications of NDT. Module 1 introduces students to the history of NDT and the basic principles and foundations of common NDT methods over two weeks. Module 2 focuses on specific NDT methods like visual inspection, ultrasonic testing, and radiography over 10 weeks. Module 3 applies NDT techniques to inspect materials and components in various industries over two weeks. The course aims to provide trainees with an understanding of NDT and the ability to select and apply appropriate methods.

PROGRAM OF INSTRUCTION

I. COURSE TITLE: NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING COURSE

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a technique for inspecting, testing, and evaluating a substance, its components,
configuration, or changes in features without compromising the product's or its component parts' usability. In construction,
fabrication, and in-service inspection, non-destructive tests are useful for confirming the dependability and durability of the product,
controlling the manufacturing process, lowering the cost of production, and maintaining a constant level of quality.
Non-Destructive Testing has many benefits, including the fact that the components being examined are not harmed in any
way and that defective components are rectified rather than replaced. Non-destructive testing is a precise method of evaluation
because it can be repeated, and other tests can be combined to correlate the results. The testing process is low-cost since it can
assist in locating the fault and resolving it without causing harm to the product. It can assist to avert casualties by confirming that
buildings, components, and machines are not damaged. The testing also gives the operators reassurance that everything is
working as it should, preventing any potential accidents and identifying all options for life extension.
Magnetic particle testing (MT), radiographic testing (RT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), ultrasonic testing (UT), coin
tap testing, visual testing (VT), and eddy current testing (ECT) are a few common NDT procedures that are employed. Each\
testing method has advantages and disadvantages. Other approaches have been developed as a result of advancements in
imaging and digital regulator technology, including Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD),
Digital, and Computed Radiography.
This course will give an in-depth understanding of the methodologies employed and their applicability without harming the
product or any of its components. NDT is utilized in a variety of sectors, including nuclear, automotive, oil and gas, railroads,
marine, and aerospace. This course, however, will mainly focus on the aviation/aerospace sector of inspection.
III. COURSE OBJECTIVES

A. Broad:

At the end of this course, this will provide a basic understanding on the different types of non-destructive
testing; its techniques and apply them for inspecting materials in accordance with industry specifications and standards, another is
to provide fundamental understanding of aspects of electrochemistry and materials science relevant to corrosion phenomena.

B. Specific:
At the end of each module, the trainees should be able to:

● Understand of aspects of electrochemistry and materials science relevant to corrosion

● To Identify various defect types and select the appropriate NDT methods for better evaluation.

● To distinguish any detection of cracks, voids/ other imperfections.

● To identify any detection of cracks, voids/ other imperfections.

● To identify and select appropriate non-destructive testing methods.

● To identify and select aircraft hardware and materials.

C. Learning Level

a) Level 1
● Basic facts and principles;

● Find information and follow directions and written instructions;

● Locate methods, procedures, instructions, and reference materials;

● Interpretation of information not required.

b) Level 2
● Know and understand principle, theories, and concepts;

● Find and interpret maintenance data and information, and perform basic operations using
appropriate data, tools, equipment;
● A high level of skill is not required.

c) Level 3
● Know, understand, and apply facts, principles, theories, and concepts.

● Understand the relationship of its maintenance and operation.

● Make independent and accurate airworthiness judgment.

● Perform all skill operation to a return-to-service standard using appropriate data, tools.

● Equipment inspections performed in accordance with acceptable or approved data.

● A fairly high skill level is required.

IV. COURSE STRATEGY AND APPROACH

This Program of Instruction is designed to equip the enlisted personnel and aircraft maintenance personnel on non-
destructive testing methods and procedures. Under this program there are three (3) modules that will cover the course. The course
will cover a duration of 14 weeks to tackle both the lecture and hands-on application of the course.
