This document provides a script for an audio/visual presentation on choosing your path in video games. It discusses early games like Bubble Bobble from 1986 that featured multiple endings depending on performance. It then covers how Pokémon Red/Blue allowed customizing your adventure through choices of starter Pokémon and teammates. The document concludes by listing many modern games that give players choices that impact events and endings, or allow different styles of play, demonstrating how customization keeps players engaged.

Hello, I’m Cameron and this is an introduction Waving GIF, Video Game Timeline,
to ‘Choosing Your Path in Video Games’. But Image of TX-1 Arcade Game.
what do I mean by choosing your path? I will
be as deep as I can into this topic in order to
show you just how many examples there are
from old to modern gaming and how it
influences players to keep hooked onto these
games. The first game to endorse this is the
arcade racer ‘TX-1’in 1983, but my first
example is 3 years later which actually went
through with featuring different ending
sequences for their game.

brothers, ‘Bubby’ and ‘Bobby’ who were
turned into reptile creatures called ‘Bubble
Dragons’ and had their girlfriends stolen by
‘Baron Von Blubba’. Players were tasked with
navigating a 100-level monster cave with a
boss fight in the final level. The multiple
endings are as follows:
- Single Player Win: The game will tell the
player that the game has not truly ended and

will hint to the player that they must complete
the game with a second player.
- Two Player Win: The game shows a happy
ending where the players are reversed back
into their human forms and reunited with
their girlfriends. This ending features a code
unlocking a faster and harder mode called
‘super mode’.
- Two Player Super Win: A second happy
ending features the defeated boss is revealed
to be the players’ parents under the control of
outside influence. Then the players are once
again reunited with their girlfriends and
changed back to human form.

it. It was a smart way to keep players on their
game for more than one playthrough. Another
1986 game with multiple endings was
‘Metroid’ by Nintendo, which showed Samus at
the end with different suits depending on how
much time it took to complete the game, which
encouraged players to invest hours of their
time into speeding through the game to get a
new high score. I want to now give an example
of customizing the whole adventure rather
than just the ending, and my first example is a
decade later in 1996.
1996 is when the first ever Pokémon games in Covers for multiple Pokémon games,

were released in 1996 as Pocket Monsters Red

as a special edition. The Pokémon games are

which are, you guessed it, called “Pokémon” or
“Pocket Monsters” in Japan. You train and level
up your monsters as they learn new moves,
abilities and even evolve them into stronger
versions of themselves. You can already
customize your gameplay experience as your
Pokémon have a maximum of 4 moves to have
a selection from, and you will have to choose
which abilities or moves to keep or replace
with new moves. Just take a look at how these
3 different Pokémon evolve throughout the
game. These 3 Pokémon are actually the
starters which the player chooses one from
near the start of the game.
Each Pokémon has their own type and these Images of Charmander, Squirtle, and

types, and these three types help the player
learn the basics of type advantages. Fire is
stronger against Grass, Grass is stronger
against Water, and Water is stronger against
Fire, like Rock Paper Scissors. Whoever you
choose as your starter in the game, your rival
will always pick after you and choose your
counter. For example, if you went ahead and
chose Charmander the fire type, your rival
would then choose Squirtle the water type, as
water types has an advantage over fire types.
Choosing your starter in Pokémon and the rest
of your Pokémon team which has a maximum
of 6 pocket monsters gives a lot of options and
this is how the game caters to a variety of
players and how gameplay for most of these
players in the Pokémon games differ from one
another. It encourages players to start again
with a different starter Pokémon and
Pokémon team.
From the around that time to the modern day, An image to appear of each game listed,

to grow incredibly in terms of popularity.
Examples of these games are game series such
as Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Mass Effect,
Persona, Fallout, The Telltale Games and The
Dark Picture Anthology Games. Singular
games that fit this category are games like
Chrono Trigger, Heavy Rain, Detroit Become
Human, Undertale, The Stanley Parable, Until
Dawn, and much more that people could
potentially name. Games that allow a fully
customizable gameplay experience through

not always mean it has to be a story-based
game. In the eSports Industry, many different
tournament players choose their own path
within competitive games such as shooting or
fighting games by choosing their own style of
play such as a fighting archetype like a zoner
that strikes with projectiles from a distance or
large grapplers that get in close and deal mass
damage, or different classes or weapons in
shooting games such as different weapons you
pick up off the ground in Battle Royales, or
classes and roles you choose in class based
shooters. You don’t necessarily need to focus
on a story or adventure for you to make
decisions within games. Why have I listed a
bunch of random games? I’m trying to make a
point of how you may have recognized at least
a few of these games, and they earn a popular
reputation because of how many different

multiple endings based on the actions and

only does it help improve our experience with
