Chapter 1

Introductory Paragraphs

In the Philippines, K-12 was implemented in 2016 to improve the country’s

education system and accelerate the mutual recognition of Filipino graduates and
professionals around the world. In this K-12 program, tracks and strands are
implemented with their specialized subjects, and one of them is Basic Calculus, which is
a specialization offered in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) in the 11th year of senior high school and one of the most difficult
subjects in this strand. Therefore, studying is very important since when a student’s
brain starts collecting and synthesizing new information, the brain cells start to activate
and make new connections, and it is crucial in order to get better grades in exams and
help the students achieve the targets and grades they want, especially if they are
considering moving on to further education (Ballard, 2021).
Basic Calculus integrates deep understanding and analysis. Most of the
SHS students do not take this strand because it has a lot of math subjects and a lot of
formulas to memorize, and they find math boring and tiring since it involves using plenty
of multi-step processes to solve problems; being able to master it takes a lot of practice
than other subjects. Calculus is widely regarded as a very hard math subject since in
order to obtain the correct answer and proper solutions to a certain problem, the
students must engage in critical thinking in ways that are more abstract, along with
requiring more imagination, and have to engage and wrestle with new vocabulary,
symbols, and processes since the problems are often longer and more involved,
sometimes taking a full page or more of written work to finish (Loper, 2022)
Recent surveys show that 37% of youth aged 13-17 regarded math to be
tougher than other courses-the highest ranking overall-and that mastering it required a
lot more work than other topics. Therefore, this study will determine what strategies and
preparations are essential for students who don’t have a proper plan or strategy for their
upcoming examination. Preparing for an exam can be stressful and time-consuming, but
it doesn’t have to be. No need to strain or cram. By doing a few simple things in
advance, you can ensure that you are confident and prepared for whatever happens on
the exam (Dorsey, 2023).

Since then, examinations are the days students fear the most because this
is the day when they have to test their acquired knowledge. In Basic Calculus written
examination, the students find it difficult and time-consuming for the reason that a lot of
formulas are needed to be elaborated first with the following multi-process to obtain the
answer, there are times that even though the student already followed and did the
process correctly there is a possible chance that the answer is wrong so it is a must to
double-check. Therefore, it is very important to prepare before the due date of the exam
and have a proper strategy to avoid getting low grades. According to Writer (2020),
preparation is very important for students, especially for STEM students since most of
their subjects are involved in math and science; therefore, they must use flowcharts,
diagrams, and flashcards, organize study sessions, explain their answers to them, take
regular breaks, and most importantly, eat healthy foods like nuts and berries and drink
plenty of water. Water helps brain cells communicate with each other and function.
(Gowin, 2010)
The researchers conducted this study to determine the different strategies
and preparations of the grade 11 STEM students before their Basic Calculus written
examination, one of the hardest subjects in STEM. Along with this study, the
researchers will identify if those strategies and preparations are effective and can be
used as a guideline by other students and educators to improve their learning styles and
improve their performance in every test, not just the basic calculus written examination.
Particularly, this can lead to better academic performance results for grade 11 STEM
students. This can explore the impact of different motivational and engagement
strategies, such as peer collaboration, self-reflection, and goal setting on the grade 11
STEM student’s performance and attitudes toward basic calculus in the PSS exam.

Statement of the Problem

Calculus is a challenging but essential subject for students pursuing careers in
science, engineering, economics, and other fields requiring advanced mathematical
skills. Grade 11 STEM students analyze, interpret, and solve calculus daily. Somehow,
they struggle with how they start studying for Basic Calculus written examination.
Therefore, this study determines the Grade 11 STEM students in PSS on what
strategies and preparedness to undertake before taking the written exam in Basic
Calculus. The result of this study will be made to assist and inform the students about
the right strategies to get a high score.

Specifically, this study will find the answer to the following questions:
1. What struggles do students encounter in preparing for their upcoming tests?
2. How do students manage their time in studying Basic Calculus?
3. What is the student’s routine for studying?
4. What are the strategies students do to pass the exam?
Purpose of the Study
This research seeks to determine the different strategies and preparations
performed by the Grade 11 STEM students in Passionist Sister’s School in taking the
written examination for the subject Basic Calculus. Also, this study aims to assist the
grade 11 STEM students in PSS with the different strategies and preparations they
most prefer and are comfortable with to get the score they aim to have. This study
seeks to present ideas and suggestions that will be extremely beneficial and important
as a part of the students' lives, specifically on how to prepare and study well before
taking the exam in Basic Calculus since it is one of the hardest courses in grade 11
STEM.

Significance of the Study

The researchers’ goal is to provide information and understanding about ways for
preparing STEM students for their Basic Calculus written exam. In addition, the essence
of this study should be highly significant and beneficial to the following entitles:

Researchers. It assists them in accumulating various activities that shape how

the solution will process through this investigation. Since the researchers are also grade
11 STEM students, the researchers can apply the findings to their Basic Calculus
written examination.

Incoming STEM Students. The results of this study will assist incoming grade
11 students in becoming more proficient and analytical by educating them on the many
tactics they can use in basic calculus.

Parents. For the parents of the students, it will be easier for them to
comprehend and be more self-aware of the difficult things to do for their children and for
them to reduce tasks at home so that they may concentrate more on their upcoming
written examinations.

Teachers. Through this study, educators may find an easier way to teach future
STEM students study techniques that will make it simpler for them to get ready for
written exams.

Future Researchers. Through this study, it will make it easier for future
researchers to create their own studies and can serve as a foundation for future
research
