7 Process Decision Program Chart - PDPC Chart

The document discusses the Process Decision Program Chart (PDPC), which is used to identify potential problems in a plan and develop contingency plans. It involves identifying objectives, options, potential issues ("what if" scenarios), countermeasures, and selecting/implementing countermeasures. A PDPC chart can be used in research, engineering, projects, manufacturing, marketing, service, and change management. It ensures timely completion and better risk management. An example PDPC chart is provided for giving a presentation, identifying objectives, options, risks, and countermeasures.

→ It is one of the most useful and easy-to-use tools of the New 7 QC Tools (Seven
Management and Planning Tool).

→ By using PDPC, we can either eliminate the problems or we can minimize or optimize the
problems or we can be ready with a proper action plan if the problem occurs.

How to make a PDPC Chart?

→ The PDPC Chart is easily made by 5 Simple Steps that are mentioned below.

1. Define Objective to be achieved

2. Identify the options Available
3. Identified the What if the condition
4. Possible Countermeasures

Example of PDPC Chart [Process Decision Program Chart]

→ With the help of the above-mentioned structured steps, we will make a PDPC diagram for
giving a presentation at the conference.

→ So we will identify the possible risks for that and we will decide the countermeasures for
minimizing or eliminating the risks.

Step 1: Define the Objective to be achieved

→ So as per step 1, we need to decide the objective.

→ In this example, it is very clear that we need to give the presentation at the conference.

Step 2: Identify the options Available

→ Now in step 2, we need to identify at a broader level that what are the possible options
available.

→ For this, we will refer to the Tree Diagram.

→ We have three different options available at a broader level such as (1) car to reach at
venue, (2) use the laptop for presentation, (3) use video projector.

Step 3: Identified the What if the condition

→ Now in step 3, we need to identify the what-if condition for the probable causes of failure
for the above-mentioned options.

→ The different causes of failure are mentioned below.

→ (1) car to reach venue - car may breakdown

→ (2) use laptop for presentation - (a) presentation file not found, (b) laptop malfunction

→ (3) use video projector - video projector fails to start

Step 4: Possible Countermeasures

→ Now in step 4, we will find out the possible countermeasures for each potential problem.

→ We will use a brainstorming approach for this.

→ Eliminating or minimizing the risks, countermeasure will help us.

→ Refer to the below-identified countermeasures for the various causes.

→ (1) car may breakdown - (a) hire a car, (b) use a public transport

→ (2) (a) presentation file not found - use a pen drive, (b) laptop malfunction - use
organization's PC

→ (3) video projector fails to start - (a) use white-board, (b) use an overhead projector

Step 5: Selection of Countermeasures

→ So after identifying the different countermeasures we need to select the

countermeasures and implement the same for eliminating the risks.

→ We need to use various criteria such as cost, time, ease of implementation, effectiveness,
etc, during the selection of the countermeasures

→ For your better understanding refer to the below-selected countermeasures.

→ (1) car may breakdown - (a) hire a car - selected, (b) use a public transport - rejected

→ (2) (a) presentation file not found - use a pen drive - selected, (b) laptop malfunction -
use organization's PC - rejected

→ (3) video projector fails to start - (a) use white-board - rejected, (b) use an overhead
projector - selected

→ We have marked the selected criteria as - O, and rejected criteria as d- X.

Advantages of PDPC Chart:

→ It helps to prepare a contingency plan.

→ PDPC helps us to select the best possible solution for completing the tasks with minimum
risks.

→ Very simple tool for using and understanding.

→ Good risk management tool.
