Relevance of Vernacular Architecture
(Reaction paper)
One of my clearest understanding about this reading material is that sexuality and space in
architecture have similarities in terms of environment and itself. In sexuality, other genders are
important because it builds up the community. Same with the spaces in architecture, the body and
the environment of a building will not be created without proper spacing. The author said that the
subjects were chosen because it is very relatable to people. Sexuality is a controversial topic and
everybody knows about it, that’s why they chose it to be compared to architectural spaces.
Vernacular Architecture is a design of a building that is according to tradition and culture without a
professional guidance. It is based on a broad and wide range of design from historical, classical and
modern era. This type of architecture uses locally available resources and traditional designs to
address local building and needs. In simpler words, uses easily available materials in the community
to build something for its people. And that the people will appreciate it more since the traditions
and culture and incorporated to its design. A good example of Vernacular architecture are the Bahay
Kubo which usually has a square or rectangular shape which is made with lightweight materials such
as wood and bamboo. And Bahay na Bato na may dingding na gawa mula sa pinagpatong patong na
bato.
