29). Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
The carbon-halogen bond of alkyl halide is polarized due to high electronegativity of halogen. The boiling points of alkyl
halides are comparatively higher than the corresponding hydrocarbons. These are slightly soluble in water but completely
soluble in organic solvents. The polarity of C-X bond of alkyl halides is responsible for their nucleophilic substitution,
elimination and their reaction with metal atoms. Nucleophilic substitution reactions are classified into two types that is
SN1 and SN2 based on their kinetic properties.
a) Why tertiary butyl chloride has lower boiling point than n-butyl chloride?
b) Why are tertiary alkyl halides least reactive towards SN2 reaction?
c) Out of 1-bromo-2-methyl –butane and 1-bromo-3-methyl butane, which is more reactive towards SN 1 and why?

30). Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
Alcohols and phenols are most important compounds used in our daily life. Alcohols are prepared by hydration of
alkenes, fermentation of glucose, reduction of aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and esters.
Phenol is prepared from cumene, diazonium salts, anisole, chlorobenzene.Phenol is used to prepare salicylaldehyde,
salicylic acid, and aspirin, p--benzoquinone. Ethers are functional isomers of alcohols, have low boiling points. Ethers are
used as solvents. Unsymmetrical ethers are prepared by Williamson synthesis. Ethers reacts with HI and undergo SN 1 and
SN2 mechanisms depending upon the stability of carbocation formed. Aromatic ethers like anisole undergo electrophilic
substitution at ortho and para positions.
