The document proposes developing an Arduino-powered smart LPG leakage detection and alert system. It aims to design a low-cost system that can accurately detect gas leaks, establish real-time transmission of gas level data and alerts between Arduino devices and a central hub, and create a user-friendly interface for easy monitoring and notifications. Previous studies developed audio-visual or GSM-based alert systems, but the proposed system would leverage Arduino, gas sensors, wireless communication, and mobile apps or SMS to provide real-time alerts and additionally stop the gas supply if a leak is detected.

INTRODUCTION

Liquified petroleum gas has been one of the reliable and efficient alternative sources of
energy in Zimbabwe. With reference to ZERA LPG gas is widely used by consumers of
different backgrounds from industrial, domestic, commercial and farmers. As the usage of
LPG is increasing, quite a number of accidents from LPG leakages has been recorded.
Liquified Petroleum gas constitutes of highly flammable hydrocarbons gases specifically
propane, propylene, butylene, isobutane and n-butane. With its nature it poses significant
risks of explosions and consequently fire accidents leading to possible loss of lives and
property damage if not handled properly. Moreover exposure to high concentration of this gas
can result in respiratory system irritation, shortness of breath and chest discomfort. LPG
leakage becomes a serious threat to users and the society. Early detection of LPG gas leaks is
therefore crucial to preventing possible accidents and minimize potential adverse effects
henceforth this project aims to develop a smart Arduino powered IOT LPG gas detector
which monitor LPG gas concentration.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Liquified Petroleum Gas is widely used as a fuel source in households and industrial
environments. However without proper handling and storage, LPG leakage may result in
significant safety hazards including fire, explosions and health risks. Therefore there is need
for development of an affordable, efficient and reliable LPG leakage detection and alert
system with capabilities of real-time monitoring. The system will be designed to
continuously monitor the level of LPG gas in the air and provide real-time alerts when the gas
concentration exceeds a predefined limit.

OBJECTIVES
 To design and develop an efficient and low-cost LPG leakage detection system that
can accurately detect gas leaks
 To develop an alert system that will notify the user in the event of a leak
 To establish a connection between Arduino devices and a central hub to allow real-
time transmission of gas level data and alerts
 To create a user-friendly interface that allows for easy monitoring of the system and
receive real-time notifications.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Gas leakage detection is the process of identifying potentially hazardous gas leaks by
means of sensors. For the past years many researchers and engineers proposed and
developed different systems to detect and monitor gas leaks enhancing safety. In a study
by Mahalingang et al (2015) an audio-visual solution for LPG Leakage detection was
developed. Their system incorporated a microcontroller interfaced with MQ5 gas sensor,
LEDs and buzzers. In their design any gas leak was detected with MQ5 sensor and the
voltage output from the sensor is fed to the microcontroller for processing to produce an
appropriate audio-visual alarm. The microcontroller receives a voltage signal
proportionate to the extent of gas leak detected (low or high) and drives the alarming
system connected with LEDs and buzzers.

Fig1
The main drawback of this system was lack of immediate alert to the user. Sumathi et al
(2014) went on to present a GSM-based LPG leakage monitoring system. They
highlighted the role of GSM technology in providing alerts via SMS to a user's mobile
phone. Their system integrated gas sensors, Arduino boards, and a GSM module,
enabling real-time gas leakage detection and notifications. However the system could not
stop the supply gas in case of leakages.

PROPOSED SYSTEM
To improve the above system I’m going to design and develop a smart IOT based LPG
leakage detection with Arduino. This system leverage Arduino microcontrollers, gas
sensors, wireless communication technologies, and mobile applications or SMS-based
alert systems to enhance safety measures and provide real-time notifications to users. In
addition a solenoid valve is going to be incorporated to stop gas supply in case of leakage.
