Abu Bakr (R.

A)
Abu Bakr (R.A) was a close friend of Prophet (S) from childhood. His pagan name
was Abdul Ka’aba, which the Prophet (S) later changed to Abdullah. He was a
cloth merchant and quite wealthy. Before Islam, he did not worship other gods
nor did he drink wine as was customary for those of his status. He was honest in
trade and used his wealth to help others. When the Prophet (S) started his
mission of spreading Islam, Abu Bakr (R.A) was the first free male adult to accept
Islam without any hesitation or reluctance. The Prophet (S) said about him:
“When I invited people towards Allah, everybody thought over it and hesitated, at
least for a while, except Abu Bakr (R.A), who accepted my call the moment I put it
before him, and he did not hesitate even for a moment.
After his conversion to Islam, Abu Bakr (R.A) dedicated his whole life to its service.
Many people accepted Islam due to his efforts, such as Uthman, Zubair, and Talha
(R.A). Many slaves were also freed by him, including Bilal (R.A), as he was a trader
by profession and very well-off, and used to buy them from their cruel masters
and set them free. The Prophet (S) said:
“The most compassionate member of my people towards my people id Abu Bakr
(R.A)”
He was also the closest friend and the bodyguard of the Prophet (S) in most
hardships. Whenever the Quraysh ill-treated the Prophet (S), Abu Bakr (R.A)
always intervened to protect him. His daughter, Aisha (R.A} narrated an incident
that when he stopped the people of Makkah from attacking the Prophet (S), he
came home with his hair pulled out.
Abu Bakr (R.A) accompanied Prophet (S) during his migration to Madinah and
stayed with him in the cave of Thawr, and is referred in the Quran as the ‘Second
of the Two’ in the Cave of Thawr. The Prophet (S) said to Abu Bakr (R.A):
“You are my companion in the cave and at the fountain (Al-Kauthar)”
In 10 AH, when the Prophet (S) experienced the incident of Isra wal Miraj and
narrated it to the people, no one believed him but Abu Bakr (R.A), who accepted
him at once. The Prophet (S) then said:
“Abu Bakr is the Siddique (the Testifier of truth)”
Abu Bakr (R.A) earned this title because his faith was too strong to be shaken by
anything. He also gave his daughter Aisha (R.A) in marriage to Prophet (S) in order
to strengthen their friendship.
Abu Bakr (R.A) participated in all the battles. In the Battle of Badr, he acted as a
bodyguard of the Prophet (S). When there was confusion in the Battle of Uhud, he
was the first to join the Prophet (S), and sowed willingness to fight even his son
Abdurrahman. When most of the companions dispersed in the Battle of Hunain,
Abu Bakr (R.A) was of those who continued to attend to the Prophet (S).When the
Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was signed, and some companions were critical of its
terms, Abu Bakr (R.A) fully supported the Prophet(S). When Prophet (S) asked for
contributions for the expedition of Tabuk. Abu Bakr (R.A) donated all he had.
When the Prophet (S) asked him what he had left for his family, he replied:
“I have left for them Allah and his Messenger (S)”
In Madinah, when the Prophet (S) purchased a plot of land for the construction of
the Mosque, Abu Bakr (R.A) paid its cost. He was appointed as Ameer-e-Hajj when
Hajj was first made obligatory, and was also given the honor of leading the
congregational prayers in the Prophet(S)’s Mosque during his last days. It was Abu
Bakr who came to address the believers telling them that the Prophet (S) had
passed away but God was alive and will never die. He was elected as the First
Caliph soon after this. He died 2 years after his Caliphate at the age of 60, in 13
AH.
Part b) Hadith:
What can be learned from him? :
 Spend wealth in way of Allah
 Have complete sincerity in Islam
 Do not hesitate over commandments
“Those who believe, and suffer exile and strive with might and main, in Allah’s
cause, with their goods and their persons, have the highest rank in the sight of
Allah.”
