Titration Experiments

This document provides information about two solutions - Solution C-10 containing impure hydrated oxalic acid H2C2O4.2H2O, and Solution C-11 containing potassium manganate (VII) KMnO4. It describes a titration procedure where C-11 is used to titrate C-10 in the presence of sulfuric acid. The student is asked to calculate: 1) the molarity of C-10, 2) the molarity of C-11, 3) the concentration of KMnO4 in g/L, and 4) the percentage purity of KMnO4 based on the given strengths of the solutions and the titration results.

You are provided with two solutions as follows:

1. C-10 is a solution containing 3.20 g of potassium manganate (VIl)KMnO, Per itre of the
solution.

2. C-11 is a solution containing 6.30 g oxalic acidcrystals (H,C,0, xH,0) per litre of the
solution.

Procedure

Rinse and fillthe burette with C-10 solution of potassium manganate (VII). Pipette out 20 mlor
25 ml of the solution C-11 of oxalic acid in a clean conical flask. To this add 20 ml of dilute sulphuric
acid (C-12) specially provided for titration. Warm the contents to about 60°C, (till the bubbles appear
at the bottom of the flask).

Now titrate the contents in hot condition by dropping C-10 solution from the burette till the
permanent light pink colour to the C-11 solution in the titration or conical flask appears.

Repeatthe above procedure to get at least two concordant readings.

The equation for the above reaction may be given as follows:

2KMnO4 + 3H,S04 + 5H,C,04 KzSO4 + 2MnSO4 + 8H,O + 10CO,

or

2MnO4 + SC,0% + 16Ht 2Mnt2 + 1000, + 8H,0

2. The molarity of hydrated oxalic acid solution (C-11).
