Chapter 5

IT, Culture, and the Society

• Technology and society or technology and culture refer to cyclical co-
dependence, co-influence, and co-production of technology and society
upon each other.
• The impact of technology on our culture, tradition, and social values is
undoubtedly huge and classified as to how it affects our society today and
how it influences human activities.
5.1 Influence of IT on Culture and the Society
• Information Technology lives among us. Digital advancements have
impacted our diverse cultures and societies in different parts of the world.
• Internet of Things(IoT)
• The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to everything connected
to the Internet.
• It defines all “smart” devices embedded with sensors,
software, and other technologies (watches, fridges, cars, etc.)
that “talk” to each other.

5.1.1 Netiquette
 Abbreviation of Internet etiquette or network etiquette.
 Refers to the set of rules that provide guidance for “appropriate” social
interaction and technical performance online.
 The purpose of netiquette is to help construct and maintain a pleasant,
comfortable, and efficient environment for online communication, as well
as to avoid placing strain on the system and generating conflict among
users.
 What constitutes good netiquette varies among the many subcultures of
the Internet, and, of course, netiquette issues change with time
and technology.
 Nevertheless, some general principles of proper online manners can be
outlined. They include the following:

Proper online manners:

 LURKING
A lurker is a user who, rather than participating in interactive websites
such as social media platforms, only passively observes information and does
not reveal information about himself or herself.
Lurking is beneficial as it allows users to gather information beforehand
before participating in anything interactive.
 READING THE FAQs
A FAQ is a list of questions that are commonly asked among
newcomers. Reading a FAQ before posting helps a new group member to avoid
committing the faux pas of asking questions that have already been answered,
an act that often generates negative responses from other users.
 REMEMBER THE HUMAN
Communicating via computers tends to lead people to lose sight of the
feelings of, or to be insensitive to, others; consequently, users tend to be blunter
in stating their views than they probably would be face-to-face.
Users need to be reminded that although they are communicating online,
they are nevertheless dealing with real people who have real emotions.
 AVOID FLAMES.
A flame is a message that contains strong personal criticism or attack. Users are
advised not to engage in flaming or participate in flame wars. One should treat
others the same way that one would like to be treated, and profanity is not good
netiquette. A rational tone and a polite manner are preferred.
 AVOID SHOUTING
Typing in ALL UPPER CASE is considered shouting, which is not good
netiquette. To emphasize a point, instead of typing in all upper case, one can use
_underlining_ or *asterisks* around the text needing emphasis.
 NOT A HOMEWORK CENTER
Online groups are resourceful arenas; however, users should not use groups as a
first resort for information-gathering or as a “quick” source for homework or
class assignments. Before going online to ask questions, users should have
completed preliminary research by visiting the library or doing a Web search.

Netiquette is enforced by the community at large, as the Internet does not

have a policing entity. It is necessary to know the importance of Netiquette
because it exists to help people to communicate more effectively whilst online,
and to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings and potential conflicts. Without a
sound understanding of netiquette, you run the risk of displaying abusive or
cyberbullying type behavior without even being aware of it.
5.1.2 Negative Practices on Social Media

SOCIAL MEDIA
• Social media is an internet-based form of communication. Social media
platforms allow users to have conversations, share information, and
create web content. There are many forms of social media, including
blogs, micro-blogs, wikis, social networking sites, photo-sharing sites,
instant messaging, video-sharing sites, podcasts, widgets, virtual worlds,
and more.
• When used properly, social media can be a valuable addition to a
department's communications strategy.

CAUSE OF NEGATIVE PRACTICES ON SOCIAL MEDIA

 Posting
 Posting is an act in which people publish or share things on
social media. For example, changing your profile picture or
just simply commenting on your friend’s post is an act of
posting. Though how can a mere post be a subject of
negative practice?
 Automatic posting- an act in which a person posts without
the sense of inhibition.
 Influence
 Influence is the ability of a person to affect one’s belief, way
of thinking, and perspective also known as the influencers.
This affects one’s practices in social media in a way that
most of them do the same thing the influencers do or in a
more relevant way people change their perspective, and
beliefs and even like to go with the flow since most of the
people like it, these phenomena is also known as bandwagon
effect in which many will try it since most of the population
has done it.
 Personal issues
 Personal issues are simply problems that are being faced by
a person. For example anger issues, stress, or even
depression. These personal issues are the ones that affect a
person’s practice of social media. Some tend to express
personal issues online seeking others’ attention on what they
think about their problem. Since most of the time people do
this to seek comfort, a phycology major once said that
sometimes it’s easier to open up to someone you don’t know
rather than some who know you.
Ways to Avoid Negative Practices on Social media

1. It’s fine to post on social media platforms just keep in mind that
everything you post cannot be deleted so “THINK BEFORE YOU
CLICK”.

2. Choose social media platform to explore, some may do you good and
some may affect your mental state also, don’t explore sites that are not
appropriate for your age

3. Not all your friends on social media are trustworthy.
