Chapter No 02 Form Tools

This chapter discusses form tools, which are precision tools used to shape metal parts. It covers the different types of form tools, including flat and circular tools. The key points are: - Form tools are used to precisely shape metal parts by reproducing the tool's profile onto the workpiece. - Flat form tools have a square or rectangular cross-section, while circular tools are circular in shape. - Important considerations for designing flat and circular form tools include clearance angles, rake angles, diameters, and offsets. - Suitable materials for form tools include high-speed steel and cemented carbides due to their toughness, wear resistance, and hardness at high temperatures.

CHAPTER NO 02 “FORM TOOLS”

Course Title: MECH-353 (Tool and Mould Design) – Mechanical 3rd Year
Teacher Name: Kamran Ghafoor
Learning outcomes: After completing this chapter students may able to know about
 Introduction to form tools.
tools
 Types of form tools
 Design of form tools
INTRODUCTION: -
Designing a forming tool is one of vital factor of tool engineering, which must be known by
every design engineer. Forming a tool means giving a particular and useful shape with required
dimensions to the part. The part formed by forming operation is generally
generally takes the shape of
the die or punch. In the forming operation, the metal flow is not uniform and localized to some
extent, depending upon the shape of the work piece.

 Form generation may be possible by others processes

 Form generation by hot and cold extrusion
 Form generation by sand casting
 Form generation by permanent mould casting
 Form generation by die casting
 Form generation on sheet metal and metal pipes by pressing

formed. The form
tool can be used as a single operation and therefore eliminate many other operations.

A form tool is defined as a cutting tool having one or more cutting edges with well defined
profile or contour that is reproduced as the desired form on on the work piece surface. Form tools
utilized for turning applications are classified according to type of cross section. Form tools are
classified as according

 Flat Form Tools

 Circular Form Tools

CHAPTER NO 02 “FORM TOOLS”

Flat Form Tools:-

Straight and flat form tools have a square or rectangular cross-section with the form being
along the side or end. These tools are similar in appearance to the turning tools. These are
usually set centrally so that they will cut their contour which is identical to the desired
contoured of the work piece. A typical example of V-notch tool.

Circular Form Tools:-

The circular form tool is circular in shape. The outside diameter of circular form tool is
determined in accordance with the height of profile to be turned. Circular form tools are
frequently used in industry for grinding, milling, and hobbing machines to perform different
operations. Both concave and convex shape tools are used in milling machine to produce
opposite contour. With the help of grinding machine opposite contour is obtaining on work by
using form grinding wheel. Similarly sprockets are formed on hobbing machine.

CHAPTER NO 02 “FORM TOOLS”

Flat Form Tools Design: -

While designing flat form tools following points must be considered

 Consider front clearance angle

 Consider top rake angel
 Base dia of part should be known
 Reference pint of tool must be known
 Side cutting edge angle will be 0 to 900
 Positive side clearance angle should be 1-20
 Tool negative clearance angle should be 1 – 50
 Tool face Clearance angle should be 10 – 150

CHAPTER NO 02 “FORM TOOLS”

Circular Form tool Design: -

While designing circular form tools following points must be considered

 Always consider Tool Diameter

 Tool Offset Distance must be considered
 Top Rake Angle should be known
 Base outer Diameter of Part should be known
 Tool face Clearance angle should be 18 – 200

Form Tools Materials: -

Following properties must be present in form tools

 Toughness:- maximum amount of energy absorbed by material before its fracture is

called its toughness.
 Wear resistance:- resistance to scratch abrasion and contact with other body is called
wear resistance.
 Red hardness:- sustaining all the properties of material when subjected to high
temperature generally below recrystallization temperature.

High speed steel, cast tool steel, cemented carbide, ceramic or diamond are suggested
materials used in manufacturing of form tools.
