Midterm 1 Sol

1) The midterm exam has 5 questions and does not allow calculators or cheat sheets. Questions involve limits, the definition of a limit, derivatives, the mean value theorem, and rates of change for a melting snowball. 2) Question 1 involves computing several limits, question 2 defines the limit and uses it to show another limit, and question 3 defines the derivative as a limit and directly computes a derivative. 3) Question 4 involves stating and using the mean value theorem, and question 5 asks about the rate of change of a snowball's radius as it melts and computes how long it will take for the snowball to melt completely.

Math 1500, Midterm 1

No calculator or cheat sheets are allowed. Plea.'3e write all your answers in the booklet
provided.

1. Find the following limits (answer can be either a number or ±oo)

(a) lim x2 + J2 + 3x + 4x4 (b) lim sin (2x) . J2

( c) 1Im
+ x - J2 .
x--+oo 4x + 5x 2 x--tO X x--+0 X

2. (a) State t he delta-epsilon definition of a limit: lim f( x)

. x--+a
= l . (b) Find a <5 such that
\~ - ~\::; 0.1 whenever lx-21::; <5. (c) Use the delta-epsilon definition of a limit to
show that lim l = -21 •
x--+2 x

3. (a) \i\Trite down the definition of derivative of f( x) as a limit. (b) Let f( x ) = 1/x.
Use t he definition of derivative as a limit to directly compute f'(2). ( o marks will
be given for using differentiation rules).
4. (a) State the mean val ue theorem. (b) Use the mean value theorem to show that if
f'( x ) 2:: 0 on [a, b] t hen f( x) is increasing (i.e. nondecreasing) on [a, b] .
5. (a) When a snowball is melting, its volume is decreasing at a rate proportional to its
surface area. How fast is the radius of the snowball decreasing? ote: V = ~7rr 3 , S =
47rr 2 where V is volume , S is surface area and r is the radius of a sphere. (b) It was
found that the radius r decreased from 5 cm to 4 cm in 2 minutes. How long will it
take for the snowball to melt completely?
