Power Generation & Water Balancing System

The document provides an overview of electricity generation and thermal power plant operations. It discusses how electricity is generated using generators that convert kinetic energy from steam turbines into electricity. Thermal power plants heat water into steam using coal or natural gas to power the turbines. Water plays a vital role in cooling condensers and supplying boilers, and precise water balancing is needed to ensure continuous operations and meet waste water discharge requirements. Examples from Thai Binh and Jawa power plants are given to illustrate water systems.

1. Where does Electricity come from ?

1. Electricity is made at a generating station by huge generators. Generating stations can use wind, coal, natural gas, or water.

2. The current is sent through transformers to increase the voltage to push the power long distances

3. The electrical charge goes through high-voltage transmission lines that stretch across the country.

4.It reaches a substation, where the voltage is lowered so it can be sent on smaller power lines.

5. It travels through distribution lines to your neighborhood. Smaller transformers reduce the voltage again to make the power
safe to use in our homes. These smaller transformers may be mounted on the poles,or sitting on the ground (they’re the big green
boxes, called pad mount transformers).

6. It connects to your house and passes through a meter that measures how much your family uses.

7. The electricity goes to the service panel in your basement or garage, where breakers or fuses protect the wires inside your
house from being overloaded. (Never touch a service panel! It is only to be operated by your parents or a professional.)

8. The electricity travels through wires inside the walls to the outlets and switches all over your house

2. How electricity was generated

Electricity generation
Electricity generation is the process of
generating electric power from sources of
primary energy.

• History
• The fundamental principles of electricity
generation were discovered in the 1820s
and early 1830s by British scientist
Michael Faraday. His method, still used
today, is for electricity to be generated by
the movement of a loop of wire, or disc of But still try, for who knows what is possible …

2. How electricity was generated
Methods of generating electricity
Several fundamental methods exist to convert other forms of
energy into electrical energy:
1. Generators
Electric generators transform kinetic energy into electricity.
This is the most used form for generating electricity and is
based on Faraday's law. It can be seen experimentally by
rotating a magnet within closed loops of conducting material
(e.g. copper wire).

2. Electrochemistry
Electrochemistry is the direct transformation of chemical
energy into electricity, as in a battery.

3. Photovoltaic effect
The photovoltaic effect is the transformation of light into
electrical energy, as in solar cells. Photovoltaic panels
convert sunlight directly to electricity.

2. How electricity was generated

Studying about generator

Energy can not be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed from one type to
another. This mean that to generate electricity, we have to use another of kind of energy.

3. How does power plant operation ?

We has to find something to heat the water to make steam. Most often either coal or
natural gas is burned to heat the water changing it to steam. The steam turn the turn
the turbine which turn the wire inside the generator and producing electricity.

4. Water Balancing system (for TPP Steam turbine)
Why this presentation mention about water ?

- Water play a vital role for thermal power plant operation, similar to water and blood to human body
- Without continuously water supplement, Power plant shall immediately stop and damaged.
- Volume of water for thermal power is huge, can come to 2-3 mil m3/day while 98% for cooling
purpose and 2% for raw water using
- Power plant has to pay tax for water using and its was calculated into the retail electricity price
- Roles of water for thermal power plant steam turbine:
▪ Cooling condenser for steam condensate for re-used of Dementalized water (98% volume)
▪ Supply water for boiler for steam generation, H2 generation, Auxiliary boiler
▪ Cooling system: Steam turbine lubricant, cooling down generator, Boiler feed pump, air
compressor
▪ Provide water for service of plant: fire fighting , filter water and portable water
▪ Provide water for Mixing blowdown water
▪ Provide water for Ash handling system and Coal handling system.
▪ Provide water for FGD system for gas treatment…
- Total water intake shall be equal to water discharge plus loss, it is the condition for waste water
discharge permit of regulation.
