MODULE 4 - Computer Network and Telecommunication For Hospitality - Lec

Computer networks allow different hotel locations to connect and communicate, keeping staff informed and improving the guest experience. This module discusses how computer networks enable communication between interconnected computers and defines internet, intranet, and extranet networks and their functions in hospitality operations. Computer networks are groups of connected computers that share resources using common communication protocols. They allow data and devices like printers to be shared, saving money and time. Examples of networking data resources discussed include distributed databases, data warehouses, data mining, and online analytical processing.

WEEK 4 and 5

COMPUTER NETWORKS & TELECOMMUNICATIONS FOR “HOSPITALITY”

Computer systems allow communication between larger hotel chains with

multiple locations to connect easier. They also help keep staff on the same page and
make it easier to access information, making your guests experience much better.

This module will discuss on how Computer Network is an interconnection

between computers or we can say computer network is group of computers linked to
each other which enables one computer to communicate with another computer. It acts
as basis of communication in Information Technology. Thus this will define what
Internet, Intranet and Extranet is and how do they differ with each other in terms of
functions and uses in Hospitality Business operations and management.

Activate Prior Knowledge/Critical Thinking Questions

1. Identify the basic function of different networks

2. Understand the basic methods of sharing data resources through networks
3. Comprehend the functions of business and individual internet connections.

WHAT IS COMPUTER NETWORK?

A computer network is a group of computers that use a set of common

communication protocols over digital interconnections for the purpose of sharing
resources located on or provided by the network nodes.

It is a two or more computers that are connected with one another for the
purpose of communicating data electronically.

Desktop computers laptops, mainframes, and servers. Consoles and thin clients.
Switches, hubs, modems, and routers.Smartphones and tablets.

It is a collection of computing devices that are connected in various ways in order

to communicate and share resources. Usually, the connections between computers in a
network are made using physical wires or cables.

However, some connections are wireless, using radio waves or infrafred signals.

WHAT IS COMPUTER TELECOMMUNICATIONS?

It is communication at a distance using electrical signals or electromagnetic waves.

Examples of telecommunications systems are the telephone network, the radio
broadcasting system, computer networks and the Internet.

WHAT IS NETWORK

NETWORK is a collection of computers, servers, mainframes, network devices,

peripherals, or other devices connected to one another to allow the sharing of data.

An excellent example of a network is the Internet, which connects millions of people all
over the world.

WHY USE NETWORKS IN ORGANIZATION?

Networks allow multiple users to share devices such as printers, and share data

Sharing devices save money for example rather buying 20 printers for 20 office
workers a company can have one printer and have 20 office workers share it over a
network

Sharing devices also saves time.

For example, its faster for co workers to data over a network than to copy data to
removable storage device and physically transport the storage device from one
computer to another

NETWORKING DATA RESOURCES

1. DISTRIBUTED DATABASE
A Database that is accessed over a network to more than one user
2. DATA WAREHOUSE
Is a relational database that is designed for query and analysis.
It usually contains historical data derived from transaction data but it can include
data from other sources.

3. DATA MINING
It is also called knowledge discovery in databases (KDD).
Data mining is about finding new information in a lot of data.. The
information obtained from data mining is hopefully both new and useful.

4. ONLINE ANALYTICAL PROCESSING

It is a category of software that allows users to analyze information from multiple
database systems at the same time.
It is a technology that enables analysts to extract and view business data
from different points of view.
5. HYPERMEDIA DATABASES
It is a computer information retrieval system that allows a user to access and
work on audio-visual recordings, text, graphics and photographs of a stored
subject.
The World Wide Web is a perfect example of a hypermedia database.

COMPUTER NETWORKS

1. TELECOMMUNICATION PROCESSORS
Support functions between the computer and other devices in telecommunication
network.
Example:
Router, Modems
2. NETWORK NODES
It is a computer devices that originate, route and terminate the information are
called network nodes. Nodes can include hosts such as individual computer
systems, telephones, servers as good as networking hardware.
3. ARCHITECTURE TOPOLOGY
It is the arrangement of the elements (links, nodes, etc.) of a communication
network.
Network topology can be used to define or describe the arrangement of
various types of telecommunication networks, including command and control
radio networks, industrial field busses and computer networks

NETWORK CONNECTION

1. BRANDWIDTH
It means the amount of data that can be sent from one point to another in a
certain period of time.
2. BROADBAND
It is a high-capacity transmission technique using a wide range of frequencies,
which enables a large number of messages to be communicated simultaneously.

NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM

1. Internet
 Remember that the Internet is a 'network of networks', so it includes a very
large maze of networks. The Internet can be accessed by the public
(everyone, including you!).
 'The Internet is the largest computer network system in the world. It
consists of many smaller networks connected together by a global public
network. The Internet is often called the information superhighway or
cyberspace.'
 There are very few restrictions on users who can access to the Internet,
so there can be access among many organizations and users throughout
the world
2. INTRANET
It is a private network that can only be accessed by authorized users.
A private communication channel for employees to access an
organization’s networks resembles the internet.
3. EXTRANET
Extranet is a controlled private network that allows access to partners,
vendors and suppliers or an authorized set of customers – normally to a subset
of the information accessible from an organization's intranet.
