EXPERIMENT NO: 13 DATE:
Specific Gravity of Bitumen as per IS 1202
OJECTIVE:
To determine the specific gravity of bitumen/tar
THEORY:
This t lone to determine the specific gravity of semi-solid bitumen road tars,
creosote and anthracene oil as per IS: 1202 — 1978. The principle is that it is the ratio of
mass of a given volume of bitumen to the mass of an equal volume of water, both taken
ata recorded /specitied temperature.
RECOMMENDED VALUES:
The specific gravity of pure bitumen ranges from 0.97 to 1.02. according to Indian
Standard (BIS) minimum specific gravity of paving bitumen at 27°C shall be 0.99
for grades A25, A35, A45, A653, $35, S45 and $65 , 0.98 for A90 and $90 and 0.97 for
A200 and $200.
APPARATUS:
‘The apparatus needed to determine specific gravity of bitumen is
Specific gravity bottles of 50ml capacity
Water bath
Bath thermometer — Range 0 to 44 degree centigrade, Graduation 0.2 degree centigrade
Balance
Take the sample (half the volume of the specific gravity bottles).
PROCEDURE
Clean, dry and weigh the specific gravity bottle along with the stopper (Weight
‘A’).
Fill the specific gravity bottle with freshly boiled distilled water and insert the
stopper firmly. Keep it in the water bath having a temperature of 27.0 + loC for
not less than half an hour and weigh it (Weight ‘B’). oo
Weigh the specific gravity bottle about half-filled with the material (Weight °C’)www

+ Weigh the specific gravity bottle about half-filled with the material and the other
half with distilled water (Weight ‘D’),
Weigh the specific gravity bottle completely filled with the material (Weight “E’)

OR,
Specific gravity (Solids and semi-solid) = (C-A)/ [(B-A) - (D-C)]
Specific gravity (Liquids) = (E-A)/ (B-A)
RESULT:
Specific Gravity of bitumen =
The average of the two results should be reported.
