Parts of The Computer

This document discusses the basic parts of a computer system, including: 1) Input devices like keyboards, mice, scanners, and webcams that allow a user to enter data. 2) Output devices like monitors, printers, and speakers that display or present the processed data to the user. 3) Storage devices like hard drives, flash drives, and optical discs that save the processed data. It also explains the functions of the central processing unit and other internal components that process the input data.

PARTS
OF A COMPUTER

Prepared by:

Information Sheet 1.2
PARTS OF A COMPUTER

Specific Objectives:
1. Identify and explain the functions of hardware components of a computer.
2. Classify hardware components of a computer according to their functions.

BASIC PARTS OF A COMPUTER

PERIPHERAL DEVICES

A peripheral device connects to a computer system to add functionality. It provides

input/output (I/O) functions for a computer and serves as an auxiliary computer device
without computing-intensive functionality. Peripheral devices connect with a computer
through several I/O interfaces, such as communications (COM), Universal Serial Bus (USB)
and serial ports.

Peripheral devices include the following:

• Mouse • Scanner
• Keyboard • External drives
• Printer • Graphics cards
• Webcam • CD-ROM
• Printer

CLASSIFICATION OF HARDWARE COMPONENTS:

1. INPUT DEVICES
--- sends information to a computer system for processing from the devices such
as mouse, keyboard, touchscreen, webcam, trackball, joystick and scanner.

a. Keyboard - The first input device developed for the PC. It is used to enter
characters and functions into the computer system by pressing buttons,
or keys.
b. Mouse - The most common 'pointing device' used in PCs. It is the device
that transmits your commands to the computer by controlling the
movement of the cursor/pointer on the computer screen.

c. Touch screen- A display screen that is sensitive to the touch of a finger or

stylus. Used in myriad applications, including ATM machines, retail point-
of-sale terminals, car navigation, industrial controls and including
smartphones and tablets.

d. Scanner- A device that can read text or illustrations printed on paper and
translates the information into a form the computer can use.

e. Voice- Input Devices - Audio input devices also known as speech or voice
recognition systems that allow a user to send audio signals to a computer
for processing, recording, or carrying out commands. Audio input devices
such as microphones and headsets allow users to speak to the computer
in order to record a voice message or navigate software.

f. Webcam/camera – are devices that can capture images and videos then
send it to the computer for processing.

g. Joystick – an input device consisting of a stick that pivots on a base and

reports its angle or direction to the device it is controlling

Other input devices are:

• barcode reader
• digitizer tablet
• light pen
2. OUTPUT DEVICES
---reproduces or displays the results of that processing such as monitor, speakers,
plotter, headphone, projector and printer.

Examples of Output Devices

a. Monitor- It displays information in visual form, using text and graphics.

b. Projector- an optical device that projects an image (or moving images)

onto a surface, commonly a projection screen.
c. Smart Board - A type of display screen that has a touch sensitive
transparent panel covering the screen, which is similar to a touch screen.
d. Printer - A device that prints text or illustrations on paper.
e. Speakers - Used to play sound. They may be built into the system unit or
connected with cables. Speakers allow you to listen to music and hear
sound effects from your computer.

3. STORAGE DEVICES
---saves or stores processed data such as an external hard drive, optical discs,
floppy discs and flash drives. Other storage device already inside the computer
includes: RAM, ROM, and the internal hard disk drive.

Examples of Storage Devices

Types of storage devices

a. Primary
o A storage directly accessible by the CPU.
▪ Examples: Random Access Memory (RAM), Read Only
Memory (ROM), Cache
b. Secondary
➢ A storage device not directly accessible by the CPU.
▪ Examples: Hard disk, optical discs, flash drives
c. Tertiary
➢ Typically involves a robotic mechanism which will mount
(insert) and dismount removable mass storage media into a
storage device.
▪ Examples are Tape library and Optical Jukebox

Example of Tertiary storage:

(A)Quantum tape library, (B) BluRay optical
jukebox.

4. PROCESSING DEVICE

✓ A processing device is any piece of hardware inside a computer that

interprets and modifies incoming data at this level.
The device for processing is the Central Processing
Unit (CPU) also known as the processor. It
performs all of the instructions and calculations that
are needed and manages the flow of information
through a computer.
An Intel Processor

✓ Other internal component of a computer that enables the interpretation and

manipulation of incoming data that are also referred to as processing
devices are the :
o Motherboard
o RAM
o GPU
o Sound Card
o Network Card
