PRISON VISITS
VISIT 1: THE PRISON AND CORRECTIONAL SERVICES, CENTRAL
PRISON, BENGALURU.
On 17th August 2023, A group of students at Alliance School of Law, Alliance University,
Bangalore conducted a study at the Open-Air Prison and Rehabilitation Centre in Bengaluru. The
jail was capable of providing space for 80 inmates and currently 42 inmates were present. The
students aimed to change the perception of criminals as bad by interacting with prison authorities
and inmates. The open-air prison promotes trust, skill development, and practical work experience,
while also contributing to the sustainability of prison operations through the production and sale
of cattles which is being reared through an association at government determined prices. The
system aims to instill responsibility, discipline, and work ethics in inmates, preparing them for a
positive return to society. Our visit to the open-air jail emphasized that a criminal past need not
define one's future. Mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth and rehabilitation. As the head
of the open-air jail aptly stated, "This place is not a jail for the prisoners but a prisoners ashram."
This phrase underscores the focus on correction and reintegration, emphasizing that inmates are
being prepared for a positive return to society.
