Band Students and Parents,

Welcome to the Antarctica South High School Marching Band! This is one of the most

exciting experiences in which you can be a part of during your high school career! The

Antarctica South High School Marching Band is dedicated to improving the lives of others

through the development of musical excellence, interpersonal skills, and a deeper understanding

and appreciation for music.

It is our hope that this newsletter will provide you with insight into what you can expect

as a member of this ensemble. Further information can be found in the band handbook, on our

website, and on our social media platforms throughout the season. If there are any questions that

cannot be answered by visiting any of these platforms, please email Mr. Wells.

Musically Yours,

ASHS Band Staff

Program Overview/Student Expectations
We here in the Antarctica South High School Band believe in the power of music. We

believe that music is a powerful and emotional form of expression that allows us and the people

we share it with to see the world in a different way. First and foremost, the priority of this

ensemble is creating quality music. The grade truly does not matter. If you are an active and

engaged member of this ensemble, you will get an A. However, this does not mean we will not

work hard or expect much from you. We love music so much that it would be a disservice to

everyone involved to not produce music to the absolute best of our ability.

We also want to set clear expectations for you right away. Each member of this ensemble

(staff included) is held to a high standard of expectations. This includes but is not limited to:

music, marching, punctuality, and conduct on and off the field. You are held to these high

expectations because we believe in YOU and we believe in the level of excellence you are able

to perform at and hold yourselves to. We truly believe that this will make you better musicians

and better people.

“Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable.”

-Leonard Bearnstein

Health
Marching band can be a strenuous physical activity. We usually rehearse early in the

morning in varying weather conditions, as well as the occasional parade and marching festival. It
is incredibly important to keep yourselves healthy and safe during all marching band events. Due

to our limited rehearsal time, water breaks are not provided during rehearsals with the exception

of band camp and extremely hot days. Here is a short list of things you should do in order to

keep yourselves safe and healthy:

● Bring a water bottle to each rehearsal

● Spend time outside during the summer in order to get acclimated to hot weather before

band camp

● Drink water and eat something in the morning before rehearsals

● Dress appropriately for rehearsal

● Engage in regular physical activity to keep yourself in healthy physical condition

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be in marching band if I am involved in another school activity?

YES!!! We understand that there are other activities offered at ASHS and we do not want to

prevent you from participating in other activities that interest you.

How much time should I spend practicing?

We recommend that you spend 30 minutes each day practicing your instrument.

When are marching band rehearsals?

Rehearsals take place during the first hour of the school day. Band camp takes place during the

last two weeks of summer from 7:30am-4:30pm.

Band Camp
Band camp will take place from August 2nd to August 13th excluding weekends from

7:30am to 4:30pm. Attendance at this camp is mandatory for all members and an absence from

this camp will be excused in only the most extreme of circumstances. Band camp will take place

at the ASHS campus and students must remain on campus for the entirety of camp each day.

Lunch and snacks will be provided. Students will need to bring water, their instrument, a pencil,

comfortable and appropriate clothing, and a positive attitude.

Additional camps for percussion, guard, and leadership will take place during June and

July at the ASHS campus from 7:30am to 4:30pm. Attendance at these camps are mandatory.

Percussion camps take place on the second saturday of June and July, guard camps take place on

the third saturday of June and July, and leadership camp will take place from July 26th to July

28th.

Band Boosters
The band boosters is an organization of band parents that assists the band staff with

numerous tasks including fundraising, providing snacks and meals during band camp, moving

equipment to and from band events, and much more. This is the best way for parents to get

involved in our program. An informational meeting will take place on August 24th at 6:00pm in

the ASHS band room and subsequent meetings will take place on the first Tuesday of each

month from 6:00pm to 7:00pm in the ASHS band room.
