HOME GARDENING: SECURING GARDEN FOR SMALL SPACES

INTRODUCTION

There is a trend that aligns with society's growing interest in sustainable food consumption

and production. Local food movements, which include urban agriculture and home

gardening, have grown in popularity in a number of nations, most notably during the corona

virus epidemic. Previously, backyard gardening was the most common technique of

gardening for supplying fresh food to one's family while also saving money. However, upon

rapid increment of populace, it becomes increasingly difficult for urban families to grow their

own food in cramped quarters. Nearly everyone has more space available to them than they

realize. It only requires a little inventiveness to see it. There are numerous methods for

securing a garden in an urban environment; rooftops, balconies, or other similar areas devoid

of soil, containers make a visual remark and are easy to manage. However, it is worth noting

that plant containers date all the way back to the Egyptians. As it turns out the Egyptians

were the first civilization to employ outdoor plant containers as a secure method of

transporting plants between growing environments (Ruvere,2020).

Planning is a necessary step in establishing a garden. It is not easy to determine which

plants to grow in an urban environment. One must take into account the amount of light and
shade in the area where the container will be placed and consider an alternative method of

providing sunlight to the seeds chosen for planting.

With the use of containers, the understudy was able to perpetrate in securing a home

garden. Four vegetables and one herb namely; pechay (Brassica asperifolia Lam) from the

family of Brassicaceae, okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) that belongs to the Malvaceae family,

eggplant (Solanum melongena) among the family of Solanaceae, lettuce (Lactuca sativa) that

belongs to the Asteraceae family and lavender (genus Lavandula) from the family of

Lamiaceae were planted in a pot around the balcony of the house. The sun is a renewable

energy source that is essential to our daily lives; from warming the globe to regulating the

water cycle, it is a necessary component of our existence. In the case of growing a plant the

sun as well plays critical role in its growth. Plants would not be capable of growing,

propagate, and maintain without the sun's energy. However, some of the plants in the garden

is not capable of holding the sunlight for too long; lettuce and pechay for instance. Lettuce is

a cool-season crop that performs best in the spring and autumn. Although the seeds germinate

at temperatures as low as 40 F (4 C), the optimal temperature for germination and growth is

between 60 and 65 F. (16 to 18 C). To produce excellent lettuce, choose a location that

receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight every day. Even in partial shade, you can

produce lettuce three to four hours of sun (Jabbour, 2020). According to Kurtz (2021)

“Pechay or Chinese cabbage grows best in cool weather, not in the long hot days of summer.

Grow it during periods where the temperature stays between 45°F and 75°F( 7℃ and 24℃).

Cabbage should never get more than eight hours of sunlight in a day.” Eggplants (Solanum

melongena) are hot weather vegetables. They grow during short on hot season. Around 75-

and 85-degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 30 Celsius) must be consumed by the eggplant soil

(Ellis,2021). Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is a hot-tolerant vegetable, performs best at

temperatures between 75 to 95 F (Brandenberger et al.,2019). Lavender requires at least 6-8

hours of direct sunlight every day and enjoys areas that are warm and somewhat dry, with

mild winters and bright summers. In the Mediterranean, where typical temperatures range

from 68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 30 degrees Celsius) throughout the spring and early

summer, the plant is said to have originated (Wikifarmer,2021).

There is enough reason for families especially in the urban outskirts to grow their food

on their own. Vertical gardening, raised bed gardening, hydroponic gardening, and container

gardening are different ways to begin a sustainable production of food. Gardeners must not

limit their creativity, it must be expanded in contradiction to the size of spaces, available

resources and gardeners’ budget. Patience and gratitude must be developed in order for

aspiring gardeners to enjoy fresh and safe food, as well as satisfaction from the many other

advantages of gardening.
OBJECTIVES

1. To evaluate the influence of small-space gardening.

2. To investigate the factors that contribute to plant withering in home gardening.

3. To assess the necessities of a plant and to provide needful proper maintenance.

ACTIVITIES

1. Create three 5-by-10-cm plots at home for each plant or use a container to plant short-

term crops of the student’s choosing.

2. Keep a record of the seeds that germinate

3. Take a note of the distance between the plantings.

4. Measure the prevalence of pest infestations.

5. Maintain accurate records of the plants’ progress.

6. The understudy filled the clean containers halfway with potting soil designed

specifically for planting with lightly compact.

7. The understudy arranges the seeds on the potting soil.

8. Each plant’s seedling were monitored daily and weekly by the understudy

9. The understudy was responsible for monitoring and eradicating insect infestations on

each plant.
MATERIALS AND METHODS

The researcher conducted the home gardening in Salawag, Dasmarinas, Cavite City.

Whereas the materials used as a basis for growing of the five chosen variety of plants was

recycled plastic bottles and black bag containers . The containers that were used were robust

and durable enough to retain soil that could endure regular soaking and drying, as well as the

pressure of developing roots, and were big enough to accommodate the growth of the desired

plants. The plants that are cultivated in containers have requirements that are comparable to

those that are grown underground. For the soil, its pH level ranges from five to seven, which

is regarded neutral and acceptable enough to generate an appropriate supply of nutrients and a

good soil response for the plants that are to be raised. As a result of using osmocote 14-14-14

as a fertilizer in the soil in the container, it was possible to grow healthy plants despite the

fact that the soil used was depleted of chemicals and minerals. Seedling preparation was

performed on all of the desirable plants that the researcher intended to plant and develop. In

the first stance, the researcher began by half-filling the container with lettuce seeds and half-

filling it with lavender seeds. The seeds were then covered with dirt. Fifty seeds were

dispersed in a single container for the pechay. The eight okra seeds were buried

approximately an inch and a half deep and sixty centimeters apart. On the other hand, the

eggplant was similarly distant, buried an inch and a half deep in a single container. The

pechay and lettuce were transferred into a larger container after 16 days. After 20 days

following seedling preparation, the okra and eggplant were transplanted. Prior to beginning

garden operations, the researcher research information such as climatic and soil requirements,

soil preparation, bed raising and planting, water and fertilizer management, insect control,
and harvesting. As a result, an action plan for each of the chosen vegetable plants was

developed, taking into account the availability of high-quality seeds, as well as the plants'

requirements and maintenance.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Pechay or bok choy (Brassica asperifolia Lam) from the family of Brassicaceae. This

documentation was taken seven days after the day of planting. Fifty seeds were planted in the

one container, only forty-eight of the seeds grow. In that seventh day no insects and weeds

point five (1.5) centimeters.

This was taken seventh day after the planting. A five seeds of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) that

belongs to the Asteraceae family was planted. Out of the five that was mentioned only two of

the seeds grow by the day seven to ten. There was no pesticides or herbicides utilized as well

as fertilization at this point. No weeds were detected as well as insects. The lavender (genus

Lavandula) from the family of Lamiaceae on the other hand from the seventh day of visiting,

none of the four seeds that was planted sprouted yet. No weeds and insects was seen. No

pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer were utilized.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena) among the family of Solanaceae seedlings was being grown

in the container shown from the documentation, the documentation was taken from the

seventh day of planting. No pesticides, fertilizer, herbicides being utilized. No weeds has

been seen but ants were seen inside the container.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) that belongs to the Malvaceae family was being showed in

the documentation above, taken seven days away from the first day of planting. Out of eight

(8) seeds that was being planted, only five (5) of them sprouted. No weeds were seen, as well

as insects. The smallest height of the okra that was being measured is four (4) centimeters,

while the longest is ten-point three (10.3) centimeters. Like the other four plants, no fertilizer,

herbicides, pesticides were utilized.

This was taken within the fourteen days (November 20, 2021) of sprouting. There was

bacterial fruit blotch discovered in the pechay seedlings. This infected seedlings initially

develop water soakage on the lower surface of their cotyledons ( first leaves), which

eventually becomes necrotic. Unfortunately, due to continuous downfall of rain and not

having enough sunlight the pechay seedlings got infected. The symptoms that was seen was

the leaf rib is water soaked and rust-colored lesions that run along leaf ribs.
The documentation above was taken fourteen days from the first day of planting. This was

seen in the container of lettuce and lavender. This is a decomposer called Millipede

Detritivore. The student notice the bad condition of the soil due to water clogging.

After the five chosen plants is ready for transplant, the plants died after being

transplanted into each containers. Many factors were being present in the result, but mainly

because of the chosen place. For appropriate care visits every day as well as managing

maintenance, the balcony was the chosen place to put and arrange each container. There was

no direct sunlight to give the plans’ necessities to grow, reproduce and survive. The fertilizer

osmocote 14-14-14 was not able to lift up the growth of the plants. Unfortunately, due to no

gate and numerous stray cats wandering around, the containers were treated as their litter box.

The plants along with the soil was completely devastated.

CONCLUSION

Study results reinforce that a community vegetable garden can considered as a key asset

and challenge in the geography of home gardening in the metropolitan fringes. Further

research is needed to understand why there is many different changes in the plants

physical aspect especially about transplanting. However, this will probably have to do with

the contact with nature and the impact on physical factors subsequently causing these

plants to wither and die. It is also important to evaluate the impact of exposure duration with

sunlight, minerals and water and the student or gardener must not be distant to create analysis

to provide better outcome and knowledge about planting. These results open important

ramifications in gardening since urban gardens can be a challenge especially when it comes

to spaces but now that the student were able to experience such outline of events, taking

everything into account, gardening can be done everywhere, may it be in rural areas as well

as in urban community.
