CE487 HW 2 Fall2023

This document provides the details and steps to solve two problems for homework assignment 2 in a reinforced concrete design course. Problem 1 involves determining the reinforcement for ribbed slabs given various load and material specifications. Problem 2 repeats an in-class problem about determining the reinforcement of a flat slab floor system given bending moment diagrams, slab thickness, column layout and other parameters. The student is to follow a series of steps to calculate design loads, moments, punching shear capacities, and reinforcement requirements for the slabs and ribs. Plan and section views of the floor system are provided.

CE487 Reinforced Concrete II HW # 2

Problem 1. Determine the reinforcement of the following ribbed slabs.

Topping + floor cover : 1.65 kN/m2
Hollow block : 1.3 kN/m2
Live load : 3.5 kN/m2
Clear cover : 25 mm
Material : C25, B420C

Follow the following steps for the solution:

a) Check if the given dimensions for rib and slab thickness are acceptable.
b) Determine the design load.
c) Check if you can utilize the approximate method to compute the design moments.
d) Calculate the design moments.
e) Determine the required reinforcement for the ribs.
f) Determine the required reinforcement for the slap (upper slab).
g) Check if shear reinforcement φ8/200 is enough to carry design shear force.

Problem 2. The in-class problem is repeated here with only one exception: assume the flat slab
thickness is 225 mm. You are given the width of column strip and corresponding moments M0 and
moment diagram for the whole strip in the following figures. Follow these steps:
a) Determine the design slab load pd (=pg + pq) (Total floor topping and plaster load is 0.72 kN/m2.
The wall load is 0.59 kN/m2, you need to change the dead load of slab only). Indicate the pg
and pq.
b) Based on the given M0 values (Figure 2.3), check the given values of bending moments for the
whole strip (Figure 2.4).
c) Based on the given values of bending moments for the whole strip, determine the bending
moments for the column strip and middle strip.
d) Decide on the average effective depth of slab.
e) Perform punching shear check for the side column 3A.
f) Perform punching shear check for the middle column 3B. (The design bending moments from
the slab to this column in the north-south direction are Md1= Md2=77.69 kN.m)
(In case the punching shear strength is not enough, keep on the solution, i.e., do not change the slab
thickness)
g) Determine the slab reinforcement at the mid-span of 3A-3B and 3B-3C of the column strip.
(Pay attention to min reinforcement area)
h) Determine the slab reinforcement at the support of 3A of the column strip.
i) Show the reinforcement you computed in a plan view.
