MAT102H5 - Introduction to Mathematical Proofs

Practice for Term test

This is only for more practice. The test questions are not
similar or the same pattern. Some answers and hints will be
posted.

1
Question 1.

(a) Prove that x2 y 2 ≤ 41 x4 + y 4 for any pair of real numbers x and

y.

(b) Find a condition on the real numbers x and y such that x2 y 2 =

1 4 4
4x + y .

2
Question 2.

If A, B and C are three sets, prove that A × (B ∪ C) = (A × B) ∪

(A × C).

3
Question 3.
(a) Write the negation of the following without using ¬ , ≰, ≮ and ⇏.
You do not need to explain.

(∀x ∈ R)(∀y ∈ R)[((x + y ≤ 7) ∧ (xy = x)) ⇒ (x < 7)]

(b) If P is false, Q is false, and R is true, is the statement [P ∧

(¬Q)] ⇒ (R ∨ Q) true or false? Justify your answer.

4
Question 4.
Prove that the equation x2 −9y 2 = 5 does not have any natural solution.

5
Question 5.
For each one of the following parts, is the given statement or formula
true or false? If true prove it, if false provide a counterexample. No
point will be given to incorrect or not enough justification.

(a)For any function f : A −→ B, if C ⊆ A, then f (A \ C) =

f (A) \ f (C).

(b) Let f : R −→ R and g : R −→ R be two functions. If |f + g| is

bounded then f g is bounded as well.

Reminder. A function f : R −→ R is bounded, if there is a positive

number M , such that |f (x)| ≤ M for all x ∈ R.

Question 6.

Let F be a field with addition + and multiplication ·, then is F × F

with the following

(a, b) + (c, d) = (a + b, c + d)
(a, b) · (c, d) = (ac, bd)
for any a, b, c, d ∈ F , is a field?

7
Question 7.

Use proof by contradiction to show that for all x, y > 0, if x ̸= y

then x/y + y/x > 2.
