What is an angle?
An angle is a form of geometrical shape, that is constructed by joining two rays to each
other at their end-points.
Elements of an angle
Vertex: The corner points of an angle is known as Vertex. It is the point where two
rays meet.
Arms: The two sides of angle, joined at a common endpoint.
Initial Side: It is also known as the reference line. All the measurements are done
taking this line as the reference.
Terminal Side: It is the side (or ray) up to which the angle measurement is done

Instruments and units used to measure angles?
Protractor
Is a very useful tool for measuring angles of different shapes, such as triangles, squares,
hexagons, and others .
Hand square
Hand squares and set squares are also some of the devices used to measure angles in
geometry. These are used in measurements of larger angles, as they have degrees from 0 to
360.
Compass
A compass in geometry is a hinged set of arms, wherein one arm has a pointed end and the
other holds a pencil. It is used to measure and construct angles in a very easy way because
it can rotate into a complete 360 degrees of a circle.
3
Units for measuring angles: degrees and radians
Degree
Degrees are a unit of angle measure. A full circle is divided into 360 degrees.
Types of angles
There are majorly 4 types of angles in Geometry. The names of all angles are: acute angle,
obtuse angle, right angle, and straight angle.
4
Right angle
The angle which is exactly equal to 90°
Acute angle
It lies between 0° to 90.
Obtuse angle
It lies between 90° to 180°
Straight angle
The angle which is exactly equal to 180°
