Module 6 - Shear and Moment in Beams by Method of Area - ARCH31S6

This document appears to be a set of lecture slides for a class on strength of materials. The lecture covers bending, shear, and moments in beams using the method of areas. It includes intended learning outcomes, definitions of key beam types and loading types, and explanations of shear and moment diagrams. It also includes examples of solving for shear and moments in beams under different loading conditions. The instructor's name and the class name and location are provided.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the session the students should be able to:

1. be familiar with the concept of shear and moments in beams;

2. be familiar with the internal effects of the external loadings on
beams; and
3. learn to solve the shear and moments in beams.

BEAMS

A bar subjected to forces or couples perpendicular to the

longitudinal axis (e.g. supports in buildings and bridges)

Types of stress in beams

1. Shearing Stress - varies directly with shear

2. Bending Stress - varies directly with bending moment

Types of Loads

Concentrated Load - acts at a point on the beam

Distributed Load - acts over a length of the beam

ARSC 313 – Strength of Materials TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF THE PHILIPPINES

Shear and Moment Diagram - graphical representation of shear and moment throughout the span
of the beam
Method of Section - V and M as functions of x for each segment of the beam between a change in
loading point or discontinuity in loading
Method of Area - the slope of the shear diagram equals the intensity of the distributed loading; the
slope of the moment diagram is equal to the shear.
