Barcodes use a series of black and white bars of varying widths to represent numeric or alphanumeric data that can be scanned by barcode readers. There are several types of barcode readers including pen wands, slot scanners, CCD scanners, image scanners, and laser scanners. Barcodes allow for fast and accurate data entry and tracking of items in various industries like retail, manufacturing, and shipping. They provide advantages over manual entry in terms of speed, accuracy, and reduced errors.

INTRODUCTION OF BARCODE

Bar Code is a method of automatic identification and data collection.

Bar Code has a series of bars and spaces representing alphanumerical information.

Bar Code uses the binary system for coding and decoding. Each bar represents ‘1’ s and
space represent ‘0’ of binary system .

Barcode, also known as Universal Product Code (UPC) Barcode.

History of Barcode
1952
First patent was issued to Joseph Woodland & Bernard Silver.

1973
Mr. George Laurer of IBM conducted research work and invented
a code in rectangular bars.
The Universal Product Code was the first bar code symbology
widely adopted in April 1973.

1974
UPC become the first consumer item ever scanned and that was
the beginning of the bar code world.

2011
UPC led to the adoption of the EAN code format, similar to UPC,
in December 1976 and spread around the globe compared to what
it was in 70’s
CODE INFORMATION

The coupon code is interesting (number system character 0).

The 75678 is Post's manufacturer ID.
The next three digits (164) are called the family code.
The next two digits (12) are a value code.
The final digit(5) is the normal check digit .

When the coupon is scanned the Point of sale(POS) computer:

1. Decodes the family code
2. Checks to make sure the customer purchased an item from the family
3. Decodes the value code
4. Sends the discount back to the cash register
•There are lots of types of barcode, but the common one we all
see all the time is called UPC, the Universal Product Code.
•Each digit is coded by two black and two white stripes. The
stripes have widths of from 1 to 4 units, and the total width for
each digit is always seven units.

A barcode reader, also called a price scanner

or point-of-sale (POS) scanner,
Is a hand-held or stationary input device
Used to capture and read information.
Consists of a scanner, a decoder and a cable.
A bar code can best be described as an "optical
Morse code."

TYPES OF BARCODE READER

There are five basic kinds of barcode readers

1. pen wands
2. slot scanners
3. charge-couple device (CCD) scanners
4. image scanners
5. laser scanners.
PENWAND

The pen scanner is a compact scanning device that
makes it possible to quickly scan a document for
download at a later date. A handheld pen
scanner can easily be used to capture text that
the individual wants to preserve for later
SLOT SCANNER
This is a stationary barcode scanner and the
item being scanned is pulled by hand through
the slot on the barcode reader device. This
type of barcode reader is usually used for
scanning the barcodes on identification cards
and cards that are swiped.
CHARGE COUPLE DEVICE
CCD barcode scanners (charge coupled device)
technology is also known as linear image
barcode scanners/readers. With this
technology, tiny light sensors are arranged,
single file, within the CCD scanner..
IMAGE SCANNER
An image scanner, also known as a camera reader,
uses a small video camera to capture an image
of the barcode and then it uses sophisticated
digital image processing techniques to decode
the barcode. An image scanner can read a
barcode from about 3 to 9 inches away and
usually costs less than a laser scanner
LASER SCANNER
A barcode reader (or barcode scanner) is an
optical scanner that can read printed barcodes,
decode the data contained in the barcode and
send the data to a computer. Like a flatbed
scanner, it consists of a light source, a lens
and a light sensor for translating optical
impulses into electrical signals.
WORKING OF BARCODE READER

1) A typical Bar Code Reader kit consists of Scanner,

Decoder, and Cable that interfaces the Decoder to the
computer.
2) The Scanner scans the Bar Code symbol.
3) It then captures the bars and spaces of the bar code.
4) Then it sends it to the decoder.
5) The decoder then translates the bars and spaces into
corresponding electrical output.
6) Finally it transmits that data to the computer in a
traditional data format.

ADVANTAGES OF BARCODE
1. Speed -- For 12 characters of data, keyboard entry takes 6 seconds. Scanning a 12
character barcode takes .3 seconds. Bar codes permit faster and more accurate
transfer and recording of information benefiting the track of work in process or the
movement of assets more quickly and precisely.
2. Accuracy -- The error rate for typing is one substitution error in every 300 characters
types. Error rated for barcode range from 1 substitution error in every 15,000 to 36
trillion characters scanned

Barcodes are efficient saves time and reduce errors.

DISADVANTAGES OF BARCODE
Barcode scanner or reader works with computers or POS
terminals.
It requires optical line of sight (LOS) scanning.
It is labour intensive as it requires to be scanned
individually.
It is less secure compare to RFID which can be easily
forged.
It is susceptible to environmental damage.
scratched or crumpled barcodes may cause problems while
scanning.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BARCODE VS QR CODE
