Product Mix

The product mix refers to the total number of products offered for sale by a company. It has three dimensions: length, width, and depth. Length is the total number of items across all product lines. Width is the number of different product lines. Depth is the number of variations for each product in terms of size, flavor, etc. Consistency refers to how closely related the different product lines are in their end use or production requirements. The more similar the product lines, the higher the consistency.

The total no. of products that a particular seller offers for sale to consumers is called
product mix of the company. A collection of products marketed by the firm.
Product line
A group of products that are closely related each other as they function in a similar
manner and are sold to the same consumer groups , marketed through the same
strategy is called product line.
Length of the product mix refers to the total number of items that the company
carries within the product lines . For example, consider a car company with two
car product lines (3-series and 5-series). Within each product line series are three
types of cars. In this example, the product length of the company would be 6. That
is if a company has 5 product lines and 10 products each under those product lines,
the length of the mix will be 50 [5 x 10].
Width of the product mix. - The number of different product lines the company
carries. For example – if a company produces only soft drinks and juices, this means
its products mix width is two. Coca-Cola deals in juices, soft drinks, and mineral
water, and hence the width of product mix of Coca-Cola is three .

product mix depth. It refers to the number of versions offered for each product
in the product line. Depth of a product mix pertains to the total number of variations
for each product. Variations can include size, flavor and any other distinguishing
characteristic. For example, if the company sells three sizes and two flavors of
toothpaste, that particular line of toothpaste has a depth of six.

way. Less the variation among products more is the consistency. For example, a
company dealing in just dairy products has more consistency than a company
dealing in all types of electronics.
