Introduction To Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering applies engineering principles to understand, modify, or control biological systems. Biomedical engineers conduct research in areas such as developing new materials for artificial organs, diagnostic instruments, medical data analysis software, analyzing medical device safety, diagnostic imaging systems, patient monitoring telemetry, biomedical sensors, and disease diagnosis expert systems. They also design systems for drug administration, model human physiology, sports medicine instrumentation, dental materials, communication aids, and study pulmonary fluids, biomechanics, and replacement skin materials. Relevant professional societies include the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and the Biomedical Engineering Society.
