I – Introduction

OVERVIEW
Road Design and Detailing
Using AutoCAD Civil3D 2018

II. Points

Points are basic building blocks in AutoCAD

Civil 3D. You can use points in land development
projects to identify existing ground locations and design
elements.

Points are numbered and named uniquely.

Each point has properties that can include information
such as northing, easting, elevation, and description. A
point that is displayed in a drawing can have additional
properties that control its appearance, such as a point
style, a point label style, and a layer.

a.) Types of Points Data

-Surveyed Points
These points are manually
-Geo-tagging
-Google Earth Points

b.) Inserting Points

-To insert Points: Go to Insert Tab and click , Points from file> Plus Sign >
Browse your Points formatted in .csv> Choose the correct
“Point File Format”> Check > Click
this > Name this group as “Raw Points”> Click Ok >
Click Ok again.

Note
: If you cannot see these points try this: Ctrl+A>
Type “z”>”Type “o”. It means you zoom in all of the objects in your workspace.

c.) Point Groups

The use of the point groups is to arrange the Point Groups Properties in order
and to display the way you want or filter these points for better and clearer view to
layout your alignment.
-To create Point Groups: Go to Home Tab> Toolspace> Go to Prospector Tab>
Right-Click “Point Groups”> Click New.
-Point Styles: Benchmarks, Drill Hole, Well.
-To modify Point Label Style: Click this .
-To filter your points: Use the “Include” and “Exclude” tabs, and check your
filtered points at “Points List”

We want to change the Font Sizes of these points, Point Style, Labels and to
show only the Beginning, PI’s and End Points.

III – Surface/Contour

a.) Creating Surface from Surveyed

Points
A surface is a three-dimensional
geometric representation of an area of
land, or, in the case of volume surfaces,
is a difference or composite between
two surface areas.

IV – Alignment/Horizontal Geometry

a.) Creating Alignment

You begin creating an alignment by marking the location of tangents and points of
intersection for a road centerline alignment. During the creation process, curves between the
tangents can be created automatically, or added later. To accommodate high-speed travel,
spirals and superelevation can be added to the curves. You can enter numeric parameter
values for lines, curves, and spirals in theAlignment Entities table.

c.) Super elevation

In this tutorial, you will calculate super elevation for alignment curves, create a super elevation
view to display the super elevation data, and edit the super elevation data both graphically and in a
tabular format. The supe relevation feature enables you to apply your local roadway design standards to
automatically calculate roadway cross slopes around curves.
Best Practice
Super elevation should be calculated before the corridor model is built along the alignment.

First click the alignment then follow this:

b.) Offset
You can create multiple offsets in a single operation, including a different number on
each side of the parent alignment. The offsetdistance can be different on each side of the
parent alignment.

c.) Elements of Curve

To show the Table for the Elements of Curve you need to label the lines and curves in
your alignment.
First Click the Alignment and Click “Multiple Segment” when you hover into “Add Label”
button.

V – Surface Profile
c.) Creating Profile View
To create the Profile of surfaces click “Create Surface Profile” in drop down of
“Profile”.

Note: You must change the Profile 1 into EG (Existing Ground) and
Profile 2 into FG (Finished Ground) for the first row (or
rd
ELEVATIONS), and choose FG for the Profile 1 for the 3
row (or VERTICAL GEOMETRY).

VIII – Assembly/Cross-Section
a.) Types of Road Sections
b.) How to Assemble your Pavement
To create a typical cross-section in Civil 3D, click “Create Assembly” in dropdown of
“Assembly” and click “Ok” then click anywhere to assemble your cross-section.
Follow these procedures for more detailed modelling.
