WORKSHEET-2

Word Problems on Linear Equations (One-Variable)

Word Problems involving Linear Equations of One-Variable

1. A boy is 10 years older than his brother. In 4 years, he will be twice as old as his brother.
Find the present age of each.

2. The sum of the ages of John and Mary is 32. Four years ago, John was twice as old as
Mary. Find the present age of each.

3. A silver coin is 28 years older than a bronze coin. In 6 years, the silver coin will be twice
as old as the bronze coin. Find the present age of each coin.

4. lan Ventor designs a new board game and offers the design to Paddington Games p.l.c.
for £ 25,000. The company offers an alternative deal: they will pay lan £ 2,000, plus a
royalty of 50p for each game sold. How many games would need to be sold to make this
offer attractive to lan?

5. Two numbers are in the ratio 7: 4. If they differ by 18, what are the numbers?

6. Warmawear produces ski pants at a cost of £ 12 per pair. The ski pants sell for £ 27 per
pair.
a) Write down the profit on each pair.
b) Warmawear hopes to sell 𝑥 pairs. This will cover the overheads of £ 10,000 and
produce an overall profit for the company of £ 20,000. Form an equation in 𝑥 and
solve it.

7. The interior angles of a triangle are in the ratio 4: 5: 6. Find the angles of the triangle.

8. A toothbrush costs 25p less than a flannel. Twelve toothbrushes and ten flannels are
bought. The cost of a toothbrush is 𝑥 pence.
i) Write down, in terms of 𝑥
a) the cost of a flannel b) the cost of 12 toothbrushes c) the cost of 10 flannels
The total cost of the 12 toothbrushes and 10 flannels is £ 20.10.
ii) Using this information, write down an equation in terms of 𝑥, solve it to find 𝑥, and
find the cost of each item.

9. Babies are weighed at birth to monitor their progress. Martin weighs 0.6 kg less than
Daniel who weighs 0.4 kg less than Kevin. Martin weighs 𝑥 kilograms and the total
weight of the three boys is 10.3 kg. Form an equation in 𝑥, solve it and state the weight
of each baby.
