This lab report summarizes an experiment to determine the initial and final setting times of a Portland cement paste. The experiment involved mixing 500g of cement with 145g of water to create a cement paste, which was placed in a Vicat apparatus. The initial setting time was found to be 41 minutes, when the needle ceased to penetrate the paste. The final setting time was 6 hours, when a second needle could no longer penetrate. Both times were within the acceptable limits specified by ACT standards. The conclusion was that the experiment was successful in determining the setting times and consistency of the cement paste.

Introduction &Experimental procedure:
Cement paste is made of Portland cement and water. Unlike concrete it does not include any
aggregates. The cement paste is the one that holds the aggregates on the concrete. The
strength of the cement paste depends on the amount of water mixed with the cement. If more
water is added than needed the cement paste becomes diluted and weaker. If the water is less,
then it is stronger, however it becomes hard to work with.

In this experiment the goal was to find the initial time of setting and the final time of setting
for a Portland Cement Paste and its standard consistence. The equipment used is a scale,
vicatronic apparatus, Glass Graduates and Flat trowel. First 500g of cement was measured
using the scale. Then measure 145 g water using a Glass Graduates. After that the cement and
the water are mixed to create the cement paste, which is going to fill the vicatronic mould, the
Flat trowel is used to smooth off the surface. It will be placed in the Vicat apparatus to find
the initial time till the needle ceases to penetrate. Then the needle on the Vicat apparatus will
be replaced by another angular one to find the final setting time.

Conclusion:
The Initial setting time found was 41 min and the final setting time was 6 hours. Both are
within the limit by the ACT; greater than 45 minutes (initial setting) and less than 10 hours
(final setting) which means that the experiment was successful, and the consistency of water
is appropriate.

Recommendation:
Improving the equipment.
