C. Discussion

What is Tourism?

The task of defining tourism is not

easy as it may appear. Since tourism is a
multidimensional phenomenon, it is
difficult to describe. Attempts have been
made in the past to formulate a standard
definition of tourism and tourist among
countries.

Figure 7. Tourism in Boracay Island

One of the first attempts to define
Source: https://www.boracaydirectory.com
tourism was that of professors’ hunziker and krapf
of Berne University. Switzerland. They defined tourism as the “Sum of the
phenomena and relationships arising from the travel and stay of nonresidents,
insofar as they do not lead permanent residence and are not connected to any earning
activity”. This definition distinguishes tourism from migration, which involves taking
up permanent residence. Since it necessarily includes both travel and stay, it excludes
day tours.

4
5 Characteristics of Tourism according to Burkart and Medlik (1997)

 Because of its complexity, tourism is a combination of phenomena and

relationships;
 It has two essential elements: the dynamic element or the journey and the
static elements or the stay;
 The journey and stay are to-and-fro destinations outside the place of
residence and work;
 The movement to destinations is temporary and shorten-term, with the
intention to return within a few days, weeks, or months; and

 Destinations are visited for purposes not connected with paid work, that
is, not to be employed and not for business or vocational reasons.

Tourism in the pure sense is essentially a pleasure activity in which money

earned in one’s abode is spent in places visited. In this sense, tourism represents a
particular form leisure and a particular form of recreation, but does not include all
uses of leisure and all forms of recreation. It includes much travel, does not all forms
of travel. Tourism therefore, is distinguished from the concepts of leisure and
recreation on one hand, and from travel and migration on the other hand.

What is hospitality?

When looking at tourism it’s important to

consider the term hospitality. Some define
hospitality as “the business of helping people to
feel welcome and relaxed and to enjoy
themselves” (Discover Hospitality, 2015, p.3). A
term implies whereby a guest who is away from
home is welcomed by a host where basic
necessities are provided such as food, beverages
and lodging. The term is derived from the Latin
word ‘hospitaire’, which means ‘to receive a
Figure 8. Hospitality Industry guest’.
Source: https://www.dsij.in

Hospitality is an industry that includes restaurants, hotels, casinos,

amusement parks, events, cruises, entertainment, and other tourism-related
services. As such, this industry isn’t just important to businesses, but also to
customers, employees, and economies. Providing customers with an excellent service
is the primary goal of hospitality managers as they focus on creating high-standard
services and environments for the purpose of making their customers feel welcomed
at their establishments.

5
Meaning of Tourist

In 1937, the League of Nations defined “tourist” as follow: “A tourist is a

person who visits a country other than that in which he or she usually resides for a
period of at least 24 hours. This was held to include persons traveling for pleasure,
domestic reason or health, persons traveling to meeting or on business, and person
visiting country on a cruise vessel even if for less than 24 hours.

In 1963, a United Nations conference on international travel and tour

recommended a new definition of a “visitor” as “any person visiting a country other
than that of earning”. This definition covers two classes of visitors:

1. Tourist temporary visitors staying at least 24 hours, whose purpose could be

classified as:

 Leisure, such as recreation, holiday, health, study, religion, or sport;

 Business;
 Family;
 Mission; and
 Meeting;

2. Excursionist Temporary visitors staying less than 24 hours in the destination

visited and not making an overnight stay, including cruise traveler, but excluding
travelers in transit.

ELEMENTS OF TRAVEL

Four basic elements have been used as criteria for defining travelers
and/or tourist, these are:

Figure 9. Elements of Travel

6
1. Distance

What must be considered under distance is the difference between local

travel or traveling within a person’s home community and nonlocal travel or
traveling away from home. It excludes commuting to and from work change
in residence.

Trip – defined as “each time a person goes to a place at least 100 miles away
from home and returns.

2. Length of Stay at the Destination

The second basic element of travel used as a criterion for defining

traveler is the length of stay at a destination.

Definition of Tourist and Excursionist as proposed by the WTO is largely based

on length of stay.

Tourist - Are temporary visitors who make at least one overnight stay.

Excursionist - Are temporary visitors who do not stay overnight in the country
that they visit.

3. Residence of the Traveler

The residence or origin of the traveler is the third basic element of

travel. For business and research purposes, it is important to know where
people live.

4. Purpose of the Traveler

The fourth basic elements are the purpose of travel. It can be divided into
seven:

 Visiting friends and relatives;

 Conventions, seminars, and meetings;
 Business;
 Outdoor recreation- Hunting, fishing, boating, and camping;
 Entertainment – Sightseeing, theater, and sports;
 Personal – Family, medical, funeral, wedding; and
 Other

7
The Nature of a Tour

To analyze the nature of a tour systematically, it will be helpful to

understand the difference between domestic and international tourism, as
well as independent and package tour.

Domestic Tourism

Refers to travel taken exclusively within the national boundaries of the

traveler’s country. People find it easy to do so because there is no language, no
currency, nor documents barriers. e.g. (You are living in Palawan and you have
a field trip in Manila)

Source: https://www.tikigo.com
Figure 10. Puerto Princesa City to Manila Travel
International Tourism

Involves the movement of people across international boundaries. It is

more difficult to travel outside one’s country because the country visited has
a different language, currency, and documentation, such as passports, visas,
and other conditions of entry to be met tourist. e.g. (You’re from here in
the Philippines and you going to Japan/Korea, United States, Paris etc...)

8
Package tour or Inclusive Tour

Is an arrangement in which
transportation in which transport and
accommodation is bought by the tourist
at an all-inclusive price and the price of
the individual elements cannot be
determined by the tourist.

The tour operator who organizes the package

accommodation in advance, usually obtaining Figure 12. Tour Package
these at lower price because he or she is buying them in bulk. He or she then sells the
tours individually to tourist direct or through travel agents.

Independent Tour

Is an arrangement in which the tourist buys these facilities separately,

either making reservations in advance through a travel agent or end route during his
or her tour.

Independent inclusive tour (ITT)

Is one in which the tourist travels to his or her destination individually.

Figure 14. Group of Tourist

THE TOURIST PRODUCT

In a narrow sense, the tourist product consists of what the tourist buys, in
a wider sense, the tourist product is a combination of what the tourist does at the
destination and the services he or she uses during his or her stay.

Characteristics of Tourism Products

A tourist product is a concept that is made up of many components. These

are made up of tourist attractions; provision of means of transport, lodging and its
associated facilities and sources of entertainment. These components may be
provided by one company or a group of companies in the tourism industry. It also
involves the tourist enjoying these products from the time they step out of their
houses till the time they get back home

Intangibility

One of the characteristics of tourism products is that it cannot be touched.

Tourism products are intangible so after using the product there is no physical proof
that one has used it. For example, a tourist books a hotel and sleeps in his room for
four days. When he checks out, there is no physical or tangible proof that he was in
that hotel. There are no products to show proof of purchase.

10
Inseparability

Another feature of tourism product is that it cannot be separated from the

provider, that is, it is inseparable. If a tourist enters a restaurant and orders food or
drink, the person who is bringing the food or drink cannot separate him or herself
from the food or drink being brought to the customer. The service provider and the
service itself are conjoined.

Tourism products are perishable

Also a tourism product is perishable when it is not consumed at the time

and point that it is provided. Let us say, for example, that a bus tour from Ibadan to
Lagos in Nigeria has been arranged and tickets have been sold out. If a passenger is
unable to be present on time to board the bus, the product perishes. That particular
product cannot be consumed again. It is lost. Similarly, if a tourist books a hotel at
Lekki in Lagos but for some strange reason is not able to sleep in that room on the
said date, that service is lost. He has to pay again to get another room on another day

No ownership

The ownership of a tourism product is not transferable to the consumer.

The consumer only owns the right to use the product because he has paid for it for a
predetermined period of time or days. If a tourist pays for a hotel room, he or she has
the right to use the room for the days that he or she paid for. After that he or she must
vacate the room or pay for additional days if he or she wants to prolong the stay. The
hotel continues to belong to the owner even if it is booked and paid for. Ownership
does not transfer to the renter because he or she has paid for the room.

Customer participation

In the tourism industry, the customer by all means would have to partake
in the delivery of the service being offered, otherwise, the service delivery would
never be complete. In the industry, a product is being sold and a product is being
consumed; there is no way this can happen without the customer getting involved. A
tourist must be on a bus otherwise the service is not being consumed. If one pays for
a hotel or a hotel is booked on a person’s behalf, the person must of necessity sleep
in the hotel room for the product to be consumed

11
Heterogeneous

Another characteristic of tourism product is that it is heterogeneous. In

tourism, tourists make use of several services, including transport, hotels,
restaurants, car rentals, and many types of indoor and outdoor recreational activities.
However, what a tourist experiences at one place is not similar to the one experienced
at another place. Even in the same restaurant, since there are many servers, the way
one customer is served may not be the same as the way another is served. The element
of the human factor creates a difference between one product and the other. Two
different bus companies could transport tourists to the same destination but the
tourists would have different stories to tell just because the drivers are different.

Immovability

Another feature of tourist product is immovability. A tourist attraction

such as a waterfall, mountain, beach, flora and fauna cannot be moved from where it
is originally located to another place. Heritage sites have to remain where they are
because that is how the tourist will enjoy and have value for his money. It is
practically impossible to move a hotel or restaurant from where it is to another place
without destroying the edifice.

The Tourist Destination

The tourist destination is a geographical unit where the tourist visits and
stays. It may be a village, a town, a city, a district, a region, an island, a country, or a
continent. The success of a tourist destination depends upon the interrelationship of
three basic factor: attractions, amenities or facilities, and accessibility.

Attractions
may be site and event attraction. Attraction can be a natural or man-made attraction.

Natural attraction is an attraction that has been created by nature. These include

Park
mountains, waterfalls, beaches, and climatic features such as sunshine and pure air

Man-made attraction includes buildings, superstructure, and historical or architectural

sites such as Pyramid, Fort Santiago, holiday camps, or theme parks such as Disneyland or
Enchanted Kingdom.

Event attraction – event attraction is one in which tourist are drawn to the destination
solely because of what is taking place there. It includes congresses, exhibition, festivals, such
as Sinolog, Ati-Atihan, Sports events like Olympics and UAAP Games, also beauty pageant
like Ms. Earth and Ms. Universe.

Amenities or facilities

Include accommodation, food,

local transportation, communications,
beaches, and entertainment at the site.

for tourism will be limited unless the basic
amenities which a tourist requires are Source: https://www.chateaubeauvallon.com/

Accessibility

Means having regular and convenience

of transport in terms of time/distance to the
destination from the originating country at a
reasonable price. If private transport is to be the
means of access, tourism flow will depend upon
adequate roads, gasoline stations, and the like.

Figure 19. Road

Tourist Service

The travel and stay of tourist give rise to a wide range of services, in the
course of a holiday. The principal tourist services are supplied by passenger
transport, which provides the means to reach the destination, as well as the
movement at the destination.

Accommodation, food and beverage, and entertainment constitute the

second group of tourist services. Hotel s are of vital concern to a large proportion of
tourist.

The third group of tourist service consist of those provided by the travel
agent and by the tour operator. The travel agent is the distributor of the product,
while the tour operator is the manufacturer of the product.

Other tourist services include:

 Currency
 Documents
 Information
 Sightseeing and
 shopping

CHARACTERISTICS OF TOURISM

Tourism and hospitality has a special characteristic which make it

different form other industries.

1. In tourism and hospitality, the product is not brought to the consumer; rather,
the consumer has to travel and go to the product to purchase it. In other
industries, an item manufacture in a factory is brought to the wholesaler and

14
retailer and ultimately to the consumer.

2. The products of tourism and hospitality are not used up; thus, they do not
exhaust the country’s natural resources. The products of other industries have
limited life and at the end of it are either junked or replaced with new ones.

3. Tourism and hospitality is a labor-intensive industry. It requires more

manpower than other countries.

4. Tourism and hospitality is people-oriented. It is primarily concerned with

people. One of the most important motivations of tourist is to meet other
people and see how other people live.

5. Tourism and hospitality is multidimensional phenomenon. It is dependent on

many and varied activities which are separate but interdependent.

6. The tourism and hospitality industry is seasonal. During vacation seasons,

millions of tourist travel, which result in increased revenues for several
tourism agencies.

7. The industry is dynamic. It is characterized by the changing ideas and

attitudes of its customers and therefore must be always prepared and willing
to adjust to these changes.

Importance of Tourism and Hospitality

Tourism and Hospitality become one of the world’s major industries.

Both developing and high developed nations are now taking a closer at the following
potential benefits from tourism and hospitality:

1. Contribution to the balance of payments – tourism and hospitality can

help correct the balance of payments and deficits of many countries by earning
the much-needed foreign currency in international trade.

2. Dispersion of development – international tourism and hospitality is the

best means to spread wealth among countries; thus bridging the economic gap
between the rich and the poor nations.

3. Effect on general economic development – expenditures by tourist can

have beneficial effects on all economic sector and can lead to the development
of different industries and other economic activities.

4. Employment Opportunities – tourism and hospitality is a source of

15
employment. It is a service industry, which could have a significant effect on
those countries with surplus labor such as the Philippines.

5. Social Benefits – social exchange takes place when tourist come in contact
with the inhabitants of the places they visit. Their social background and their
presence affect the social structure and way of life of the local residents.

6. Cultural Enrichment – tourism and hospitality emphasizes a sharing and

appreciation of cultures rather than the lack of trust brought about by
isolation. Through tourism and hospitality, we can appreciate the rich human
and cultural diversity that the world offers and evolve a mutual trust and
respect for one another and the dignity of life on earth.

7. Educational Significance – tourism and hospitality enhances one’s

education. International conference, seminars, and study trips held each year
enable people of all nations to exchange ideas, propose solutions to problems,
and share their concerns. They provide up-to-date information for enhancing
the knowledge and skills required for the development of the tourism and
hospitality industry.

8. A vital force peace – A properly designed and developed tourism and

hospitality can help bridge the psychological and cultural distances that
separate people of different races, colors, religions, and stages of social and
economic development. In facilitating more genuine social relationships
among individuals, tourism and hospitality can help overcome prejudices and
foster international brotherhood and world understanding. Thus, tourism and
hospitality can become a real force for world peace.

Tourism and hospitality play a large role in the world economy and is a main
source of employment to many countries. All the benefits it brings play a
significant role for global development in terms of infrastructure, cultural
heritage, and societal progress, among others. Thus, Tourism and Hospitality
is an industry that benefits every area of a nation’s economy.

16
Tourism’s need and importance in 2020 (during pandemic)

The importance of tourism and its industry is now

much more visible. In 2020 and all the countries are
trying their best to contain the coronavirus pandemic
and its effects and are struggling to come out of it.
They are also now looking at their economies and how
to bring these back to growth. The First most badly
affected industry as it is seen as highly risky activity.
Still, many countries have now begun or are planning
to restart tourism. This is because they know how
important tourism is to economies and how tourism
can help bring back growth and also create plenty of
job opportunities.

How Tourism adapt to a new normal?

After a month of lockdown, it’s no

surprise that people are very excited to get
out when MGCQ (modified general
community quarantine) is announced and
implemented. But even though some of the
regions are now under the MGCQ status
still the governors from the different
provinces are unsure whether to totally
open its border despite of the increasing
number of infected in the country and it is
not only the officials who are unsure about
Figure 21. Tourist wearing
the next steps, it’s also the tourism businesses becausemask
Source: https://www.freepik.com
the change is still continuing to dictate the immediate
future, knowing the likely trends is imperative for operators in the sector.

There’s a real tug of war going on-people are keen to get out from their
lockdown locations, but at the same time they’re guided by COVID-19 restrictions
and are cautious of protecting their personal health,” What this means is that a
sense of safety and security will really drive tourists’ choices, affecting not only
how and where they travel, but also what they do on holiday. People will be
travelling for shorter periods and in smaller groups, preferably with family
members and friends, as the proximity of loved ones creates a sense of
reassurance and reduces perceived risks. Nature and the outdoors are expected to
dominate travel plans, with an end to group tours and experiences, including
theme parks, casinos, and to some extent, even visits to capital cities. With risk

17
reduction driving tourist choices, tourism operators must adapt.

Operators that instill trust are likely to lead the

revival of tourism. Restaurants, hotels, malls and
museums modify and redesign experiences to
accommodate social distancing and hygiene
issues, and this is what will need to continue.
Flexibility will also be important, as tourists are
keen to keep control of their travel plans-right up
to the last minute-in case substances require them
to change. This is a clear call for tourism operators
to amend rigid booking or cancellation policies if
they wish to appeal to the new tourists. while
innovation and creativity will be valuable assets
Source: https://theconversation.com for all tourism operators, those that embrace
technology will undoubtedly be one step ahead of

the competition. Covid-19 has deepened
people’s connection with digital services that is why technology is no longer an option
or a luxury for a tourism provider, but a survival necessity,” Contact free services and
experiences will all be in demand.

Figure 8. Hospitality and Tourism Components

Hospitality and Tourism cannot be separated.

An area where has good hotel and restaurant resources can attract more
tourists. People are search for better accommodation and dining location so the
hospitality should be regarded seriously. Tourism developed area have higher
demand for the hotel, more tourists’ needs, more place to live and relax. These two
industries not only can bring income to promote the national economy, but also solve
the problem of employment and with the development of the society, human’s
activities promote the development of many new industries. Hospitality and tourism
are two of these industries.

Scenario: Relationship of Hospitality and Tourism

Meet Lalisa!

Lalisa loves to travel. She has been to many different countries and has had
many different experiences that she loves to talk about. One day while out to lunch with a
close friend, she began to tell her friend about her latest trip to Paris. She talked about the
food, the hotels, and all of the wonderful sightseeing she did. Not long into the conversation,
it dawned on her that all of her touristic travels are closely tied to the hospitality industry.
You see, every time Lalisa travels, she partakes in some sort of hospitality service. In this
lesson, we'll look more closely at how these two areas are connected.

Before we look at the connection between hospitality and tourism, let's review
exactly what the hospitality industry is. Well, the hospitality industry is an industry that
offers services to us that go beyond our basic needs and generally require extra income to
purchase. These services include things like accommodations and restaurants. So, every time
Lalisa stays in a hotel and grabs dinner at a nice restaurant, she is supporting the hospitality
industry.

independent and competitive businesses. Yet they are interrelated and independent.
The independence among the components is strong especially in those countries

dominate as a global industry.
